• The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains as Maya sipped her coffee, trying to push the events of the previous evening out of her mind. Rafael's sudden appearance at Jane’s house had left her shaken, and her emotions were still a tangled mess. She was about to start her day when her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter. Seeing her mother’s name flash across the screen, Maya hesitated before picking it up.
• “Hi, Mom,” she answered, keeping her tone light.
• “Maya, darling,” her mother’s cheerful voice came through. “I was wondering if you’d come over for dinner tonight. Victor really wants us to have a proper family evening now that you’re back.”
