- The air in Jane’s house had become suffocating. Every time Maya heard a car pull up or a knock at the door, her heart leapt into her throat. Rafael was asking too many questions, and Victor’s cryptic warnings played over and over in her mind. She couldn’t afford to stay any longer—not when her children’s safety was at stake.
- “Jane,” Maya said one evening, her voice trembling. “I need your help. We have to leave.”
- Jane looked up from her spot on the couch, alarm flashing across her face. “Leave? Maya, what’s going on? Did something happen?”
