A stream in the palace trickled nearby, its gentle sound the only thing breaking the silence. Chloe stood at the edge of the water, pressing her hand against her side where Astrid had landed a brutal hit during their fight. The pain was sharp, but it was nothing compared to the storm raging inside her.
She hated Astrid. Hated that woman’s smugness, her arrogance. But most of all, she hated the way Kael had stepped in—protecting her like she was some helpless girl.
The sound of footsteps behind her made her tense. She knew who it was before she even turned.
