Chapter 29
- Kael walked slowly through the hallway, his heart pounding against his chest. Chloe’s door was just ahead, slightly ajar. He hesitated, gathering his thoughts. The image of her tear-streaked face haunted him. How could someone as bright and pure as Chloe be forced to endure such pain? Guilt and fury churned inside him. He felt responsible, somehow. He should have been there for her.
- He reached the door, tapping softly. “Chloe… it’s me.” His voice was gentle, almost pleading.
- “Go away,” came her muffled reply from the other side. Her voice cracked, and Kael’s heart broke a little more.
