Chapter 4 Escape, Resolution
- Philip did not want to think much about this, at least for the time being. After all, he might encounter the zombies that were not far away from where he was, so, he decided to find a place that would be slightly safe.
- It was just that, he was not sure about what to do. Currently, if he wanted to go anywhere, he would have to go to the road. Otherwise, if he had to go on foot, it would take him a considerable time to be able to get to the convenience store that was close by.
- If it was before the apocalypse, moving such a distance was only just a matter of about 20 minutes. But in the apocalypse, if he encountered dangers, things would definitely get out of hand.
- It was clear that he could deal with the zombies, at least one by one. But if he was surrounded by many, and if the conjecture about a person turning into a zombie when either bitten or scratched, then he would be at a greater risk.
- Philip frowned for a moment, before looking at the headless body of the zombie on the ground. He went ahead and suppressed the disgust towards the bloody scene and searched the pockets of the zombie.
- He managed to find a phone. When he checked it, he realized that its battery was currently at 87%. After swiping the screen, it needed to be unlocked. To do that, a fingerprint was needed.
- Philip was silent for a moment, before picking the hand of the zombie, and trying to see if it could unlock the phone. And lucky for him, it actually did.
- The moment that the phone was unlocked, Philip immediately went to the settings, to change the security settings. Once again, using the fingerprint of the headless zombie, he managed to change the security settings, using his fingerprint instead.
- With that set, Philip immediately began approaching the road not far away. He was moving cautiously, to avoid attracting the attention of the zombies that had already dealt with the few people that were on the road.
- Something that Philip had noticed was that, the number of zombies had increased. It was clear that quite a number of people had been converted into zombies after being bit or scratched by the zombies.
- With a cautious expression on his face, all the muscles in his body tense, Philip continuously observed his surroundings as he moved. He maintained moving within the bushes, not approaching the road directly.
- When he went close to a car, which was quite a distance away from the zombies, he finally took a deep breath.
- He had already made a plan in his mind. It was just that he was not sure if this plan was going to work or not. After all, all those movies and novels that he had read gave him different ideas about the apocalypse. In some of them, the electronic devices would not function, and in others, vehicles would not.
- For others, everything literally worked, that was especially if the apocalypse was caused by the eruption of a certain type of virus. Philip was sure that this was not a virus, but something that transcended human understanding.
- So, he just hoped that just like how the phone was currently functioning, the car would not malfunction. Otherwise, he would be trouble.
- He was currently still holding the broken tree branch. This was the only weapon that he currently had, and unless he found something better, this would have to do.
- After taking a deep breath, observing the zombies, which were currently staggering around, Philip suddenly made a run for a car that was not far away from where he was.
- The distance from where he was hiding in the bushes to the car was only less than 5 meters. As for the closest zombie, it was more than 10 meters away. Considering that the zombies were slow, Philip believed that he would be able to get into the car before the zombies charged at him.
- Philip arrived in front of the Toyota Tacoma that he had chosen. Currently, the doors of this car were closed, and Philip was just making a gamble. After all, if the doors were locked, things would get complicated.
- And if he got inside the car, and there were no car keys, then things would get even more dangerous, as he might end up being trapped here by the zombies.
- The moment that he arrived in front of the car, Philip immediately pulled the door open. He was just about to jump into the car when instinctively, he dodged backwards.
- Had he been just a second late, he would have been scratched by the sharp zombie claws that had suddenly extended from the car.
- It was only at this moment that Philip realized that there was actually a zombie inside the car. It was in the passenger seat, and looked like a female high school kid. This female zombie was currently strapped on the seat by the seat belt, and there was no driver inside the car at the moment.
- Roar!
- This zombie was aggressively waving its hands at him, struggling to break free. It was clear that before Philip came over, the zombie had entered the ‘hibernation’ mode. But now that Philip had come close, it had awoken.
- Philip looked around, realizing that the closest zombie was already approaching. That implied that if he delayed any further, he would be surrounded, considering that the other zombies were also attracted by the roaring of this female zombie.
- Philip could feel his heart racing, and was already sweating. He was considering his options. Currently, this was definitely the car that he could access, as long as he could deal with the zombie inside.
- As for the other cars, it was impossible for him to get to them, unless he dealt with the zombies that were approaching.
- Philip looked inside the car, and realized that the car keys were still there. So, decisively, Philip swung the broken tree branch at the head of the female zombie.
- But considering that the female zombie was waving its hands, the broken tree branch collided with the left arm, before it headed for the head.
- It was just that this attack did not reach the head of the zombie, as Philip realized something. While it was true that the head of the zombie was fragile, the same could not be said about the arms of the zombie.
- In fact, the moment that the two of them collided, Philip felt a tremor rushing from the broken tree branch that he was holding. This was enough to show just how hard the arm of the zombie was.
- Still, Philip reacted, attacking once again. Perhaps due to the first attack, the zombie had grown even more relentless in waving it s arms. It was clear that it was intent on getting its hands on Philip.
- But due to the advantage that he held against the zombie that was currently held back by the seat belt of the car, Philip attacked three more times, before finally managing to land a hit on the head of the zombie.
- Splat!
- Just like with the other two zombies before, the moment that the attack connected, the head of the zombie was blasted open. Blood and brain matter immediately sprayed out, with some dropping on Philip.
- Philip had no time to get disgusted, considering that during the time that he was dealing with this zombie, the closest zombie had already approached.
- Philip had no intention of dealing with these zombies. After all, by now, Philip could count at least seven zombies in total around. If all of them surrounded him, and just one of them managed to scratch him, then he would be done for.
- So, the moment that the zombie jumped towards him, Philip dodged to the side. Then in the next moment, he swung the broken tree branch at the head of the zombie that was stumbling after colliding with the car, after missing its target.
- Bang! Splat!
- The head of this zombie was also exploded by the attack.
- Philip did not have the time to look at the zombie, or the two notifications that he had gotten in his mind. Instead, he kicked the door of the pickup, closing it. Then, he rushed to the other side, before entering the car through the driver's door.
- As for the headless zombie inside the car, Philip had no intention of getting rid of it, at least for the time being. So, he started the engine, before driving. It was a good thing that he already had a driver’s license, and had been driving different types of cars for quite a while now.
- Bang!
- A zombie that had just appeared in front of the car was immediately knocked down by the car. Blood splattered on the windscreen of the car, and Philip had no choice but to use the wipers to wipe away the blood.
- At this moment, the adrenaline in his body was still on. The sweat had already accumulated on his face, and back. Right now, the only thought in his mind was to get as far away as possible from this place.
- It was just a few moments before he managed to drive the car away, which made him feel relieved. At least the car was functional. Otherwise, with all the zombies attracted over, it would be difficult to extract himself.
- It was only after driving for about a minute that Philip finally felt relieved. He could see that he had already left those zombies quite a distance behind him.
- It was just that Philip noticed that there was quite a number of zombies along the way, with several people still alive and fighting for their lives. Others were in their cars, just like him, speeding away either in the same direction, or in the opposite direction.
- And as he was driving, approaching the convenience store, Philip suddenly thought of something. The sound of the car engine would definitely attract the zombies over. That implied that if he stopped in front of the convenience store, he would definitely be attacked by the zombies that would be attracted over.
- After thinking for a moment, Philip gritted his teeth and thought resolutely, ‘This is the apocalypse. It is either I kill, or get killed. I will kill the zombies first, while collecting as much resources as possible before leaving.’
