Chapter 6 Level Up, Professions

  • Philip felt extremely lucky considering that he was not within the city. While it was true that he was capable of getting stronger by killing the zombies, he would not be able to do that if he ended up dead.
  • That was the exact reason why he did not risk to attack all the zombies around the convenience store. He could kill quite a number of zombies, especially with his improved strength. But what would happen if the zombies that were at the park suddenly came over?
  • No matter how strong he was, without enough stamina, and being surrounded by a large number of zombies, he would only end up getting himself killed. It was for that reason that he was currently heading towards the road that led out of the city.
  • This city was quite big, and its population was not low. So, the number of zombies was quite high as well. On the other hand, his family was not located within this city, and he was intending on going to his family.
  • It was just that the situation at the moment could not allow him to make a call to his family. After all, he was driving, and with several cars speeding by, while others already involved in accidents, or others with their drivers already turned into zombies, if he was careless even for a moment, he might end up in an accident himself.
  • So, he was planning to get as far as possible from the city, get to an area where there were no people, before finally trying to contact his family.
  • It would be a lie if he said that he was not anxious to know about the current situation of his family. From the information, it was clear that this was an apocalypse that affected the entire world. So of course, his family was also experiencing an apocalypse at the moment.
  • Just from the scenes that he had seen along the way until now, he understood just how dangerous it was for ordinary people to deal with the zombies. How many people had the courage of dealing with a zombie?
  • In fact, in most situations, if someone saw a zombie charging at them, they would react differently. Some would try running away, others would try fighting back, while others might be frozen on the spot.
  • Despite all that, the dangers of the zombies could not be ignored. So, not to mention if his family ended up being attacked by zombies, they might even have turned into zombies the moment the apocalypse descended!
  • It was only after he had driven the car for more than 30 minutes that he finally got to a place that was quite a distance away from areas that had many people. This road was rarely used, and it was the reason why he had selected it.
  • While driving at a speed of 10km/hr, Philip took out the phone that he had taken from the zombie. With his shaky fingers, he dialed his father’s number, before making a call.
  • Tuuut! Tuuut! Tuuut!... Tut! Tut! Tut!
  • The moment that the call went through, Philip was slightly relieved. But just as he was nervously waiting for his father to receive the call, the call suddenly ended.
  • Slightly panicking, Philip looked at the phone, only to realize that the network sign on the phone had disappeared. It currently showed that there was no network.
  • “Damn!”
  • Philip cursed out loud, before trying to make a call again. But it was the same result. Without the network, it was impossible for the call to go through.
  • It was at this moment that Philip felt that he was stupid. If he had managed to find somewhere to hide, make a call, get to know the situation of his family, before rushing to the convenience store, this would not have happened.
  • But understanding that nothing could change no matter how angry he was, Philip decided to focus on another matter.
  • While inside the convenience store, Philip had killed quite a number of zombies. He was not sure about the number exactly, considering that he was not bothered to count.
  • Still, he had received a notification after killing a few zombies. At that time, he could not pay attention to what the notification was about, and was only focused on getting the resources.
  • When he thought about the notification, a transparent screen appeared in front of him. On it, there was a notification that was displayed.
  • [Congratulations on killing 10 zombies. You can upgrade, and enter a status of being a mutant, to officially begin the evolution.]
  • [Would you like to level up to level 1, and officially begin the evolution?]
  • [Y/N]
  • Looking at the two options, Philip did not hesitate to select Yes. What was there to hesitate about? With the information that he received before the start of the apocalypse, he already understood that there was evolution, it was just that he did not receive the method of evolution.
  • But now, with this notification, it was clear that in order to be able to develop, he would need to kill the zombies. Killing zombies granted experience points, which would allow him to be able to level up.
  • Immediately after he selected to continue with the evolution, the information on the screen suddenly changed.
  • [Congratulations on leveling up to level one. You can select a profession that you would want to follow. After selecting a profession, you cannot change it. Select carefully.]
  • Immediately after this prompt, a list of professions suddenly appeared. They were categorized into two categories, combat and non-combat.
  • The combat category included: Warrior, Mage, Warden, Assassin, Reaver, Swordsman, Archer, Berserker, Wraith, Blighter, Bonecaller, Ashpriest, Spiritbinder, Paladin, Shieldbearer, Duelist, Spearman, Slayer, Marauder, Outrider, Deathblade, Howler, Fangrider….
  • The non-combat category included; Runeweaver, Tinkerer, Blacksmith, Herbalist, Dustbrewer, Relic Hunter, Bonecarver, Weaver, Stonehand, Forager, Salvager, Stitcher, Chef, Cartwright, Brewmaster, Farmer, Trackmender, Pathseeker, Wright, Scrapsinger….
  • Just looking at the categories that were presented in front of him made Philip feel slightly dizzy. He was wondering, just how was he supposed to make a selection from this big list. Would he even have the time to go through the entire list?
  • Just as he was thinking about this, the list in front of him suddenly began changing. At the same time, he received yet another prompt from the screen in front of him.
  • [Selecting the professions that match your race and personality…]
  • It only took a moment before the list was refreshed again. It was just that this time, the number of professions that appeared were not as numerous as before.
  • But something that made Philip frown slightly was the fact that only the combat category appeared. The non-combat category disappeared. Philip could not help but wonder, could it be that the non-combat category was not suitable for him, or the human race?
  • Despite that, he looked at the professions that had been presented to him. They included: warrior, mage, berserker, swordsman, archer, paladin, warlock, shadow warrior, elementalist, and mindweaver.
  • With only nine professions appearing, Philip could only assume that they were related to his race and personality. Maybe there were other areas that were used for judgment, but that was not something that he needed to bother with at the moment.
  • While driving at a slow speed, Philip focused on each of the profession, and the moment that he did so, he received the information about that particular profession.
  • In just a little while, he had already understood each profession. For the warrior profession, it basically allowed someone to be able to fight at a close distance. It allowed a person to be able to wield any type of weapon or use any type of fighting strategy such as using fists and kicks.
  • The only downside about this was that it did not focus in a particular area, making someone adept in many, but not master of any.
  • The mage profession on the other hand allowed someone to be able to choose a single element that they would wield. Then, they would be able to use that element in the future either in fighting or any other thing that required it. The downside about this was that during leveling up, no attribute points would be assigned to the physical attributes.
  • Berserker on the other hand was not that much different from the warrior profession. It was just that the berserker profession gave someone a boost in their attributes during combat. But in return, they would have to sacrifice their temper, making them easy to irritate, and sometimes, they might even lose their mind during a fight, with the only thought being to deal with their enemies.
  • The boost that the holder of this profession gained was quite substantial. But, the downside was also quite high. The higher the boost, the higher the side effects.
  • A swordsman was basically a warrior that only focused on using a sword. The same applied to an archer, who mainly focused on shooting arrows and marksmanship.
  • A paladin had the ability of healing, and more than that, they could also boost the attributes of allies during a battle. Simply put, they mainly played the support role, but that did not imply that they did not have the combat ability to fight.
  • Then there was the Warlock profession. This was a combination of the warrior and mage path. This allowed someone to be able to both be physically strong, and at the same time, wield magic.
  • The downside about this was that during the attribute allocation, if someone allocated the attributes evenly, it would be difficult for them to be able to be stronger than those of the same level focusing on a single path. So, one would have to select either the warrior or the mage path as the primary path, and the other one would be secondary, playing the support role.
  • The shadow warrior on the other hand was more like an assassin profession. While it had more abilities, such as allowing someone to be able to manipulate the shadows, it would mostly fit those that want to become assassins.
  • Elementalists had the ability of manipulating elements. It was not a single element like a mage, but instead, a person could control all elements. But of course, it all depended on the magic power. The higher the magic power, the higher the number and complexity of elements that could be controlled.
