Chapter 3

  • 10:59am
  • In front of the Legacy Restaurant
  • The fatty security guard checked the time, then he pick a card in his right hand and he hold his baton in his left hand. He looks towards the road.
  • "It's almost time. Hehe his almost here." the fatty security guard thought.
  • Suddenly, a young man in his early 20s appeared. He was running as fast as he can towards the restaurant.
  • "Run faster! You only got 15 seconds left!" the security guard shouted. Then he holds his baton like a microphone and start counting down.
  • "10"
  • "9"
  • "8"
  • "7"
  • The young man snatched the card the security guard was holding and went directly at the back of the security guard.
  • "4"
  • "3"
  • The young man inserted the card in a bundy clock.
  • "2"
  • "Ting!"
  • "Ivan, did you make it?" the fatty security guard asked.
  • Ivan didn't answer, instead he returned his attendance card to the security guard smiling.
  • "Hahaha you're indeed the buzzer beater king! You're the man!" the fatty security guard cheered.
  • "Idiot!" Ivan tap the fatty security guard's shoulder and said jokingly.
  • Then they both laugh loudly.
  • Lester, the security guard, got used to Ivan. He was always make his attendance at the neck of time. So he adds fun into it. He makes Ivan's time-in like the last few seconds of a close score basketball game.
  • "Thanks man!"
  • "Tomorrow again? Hehe" asked Lester
  • "No, tomorrow is my day off. So you have to play on your own." answered Ivan as he enter the restaurant.
  • "That's no fun! Why do you have to have a day off!" Lester retaliated but suddenly remembered something.
  • "Wait!"
  • "What?" Ivan asked.
  • "The boss is here. He was asking about you. Go to him first." Lester explained.
  • "Copy!" Ivan answered as he move forward. "I guess I won't be needing my uniform again today" he thought.
  • Upon entering, he went directly at the owner's office. He knock thrice then he opened the door.
  • "Good morning Mr. Reyes!" Ivan greeted the middle age man reading in front of a table full documents. He look up at Ivan, close the document he is reading then nodded, indicating Ivan to enter.
  • Ivan entered and look at documents in the table. "Hmmm... where are this documents coming from?" he thought but he didn't dare to ask.
  • Every time Ivan came here, his boss' table is full of documents. Which made Ivan wondered what it is for. By what he know Mr. Reyes only registered business is this two storey restaurant and nothing more. But with the volume of this documents, it seems like Mr. Reyes is a boss of a big corporation, a head of government agency or the likes.
  • "Sir, you were looking for me?" Ivan asked.
  • Mr. Reyes look at Ivan and explained, "Hmm... I need you to do me some errands but you have to do it later. Two of your co-workers are on leave so we are currently undermanned. So I still need you at the restaurant during the peak hour. You can only go after they flow of costumers subsided. Is it okay with you?"
  • Ivan's two jobs are in this restaurant. He is a registered as a waiter from 11am to 7pm. And also the establishment's maintenance from 9pm to 5am next day. But a most of the time he is being pulled out by Mr. Reyes to do different works like delivering and receiving document, purchasing ingredients, paper works and anything his boss ask him to do. In short, even though he has job title but he is more likely an all-rounder.
  • But Ivan never complained, to him as long as Mr. Reyes never asked him to do something illegal it's fine. And actually he is willing, not all bosses allows their employees to do two full time jobs. More importantly in Ivan's case it is a two jobs in one establishment. So he was rather thankful.
  • Even Ivan is wondering why would Mr. Reyes allowed such but for Ivan it is what he needed. He really needed to two fulltime jobs so he can provide for his mother medication.
  • "Yes Mr. Reyes! No problem."
  • "Then report to me here later."
  • "If there nothing else then I go to my post first, Mr. Reyes." Ivan then bow and leave.
  • ...
  • Ivan went straight to the dining hall. When some of his co-workers noticed him, they approached to talk. Since it is but few minutes pass 11a.m. then they don't have many customers yet.
  • "Ivan, did not boss called you? Are not you doing some errands to him today?" his co-workers asked.
  • Usually when Mr. Reyes asked for Ivan, he for sure won't come back for he will go straight doing some errands.
  • "I will do it later. Since two of our co-workers are on leave then you will be undermanned if I go now. I'll report to him after the pick hour." Ivan answered.
  • "But ain't he abusing you so much with that. Why do you always agree to his request? Doing errand is not part of your job description." someone said.
  • "His right Ivan. You really don't have to agree every time. Why won't Mr. Reyes just hire someone to do this errand anyway?" another one followed.
  • "If you want we can all go to Mr. Reyes office and protest this. This clearly an abuse of authority." continued another one.
  • Legacy Restaurant can't be considered as a big one. So everyone know each other like friends. It may from opening or closing shift or even the guards at the entrance or the personnel at the kitchen, they all know each other. After all everyone was hired almost at the same time when the restaurant opened two years ago.
  • "Haha, everyone thank you for the concern. But let us not make this things like a big deal. After all Mr. Reyes is our boss. And we awe him our job. To me it doesn't matter if what work he want me to do. As long as not an illegal and I'm being paid for my services then it should be fine." Ivan answered
  • "Haha 'as long as being paid'. That is a typical Ivan. What else could we say? Well, it's work time everyone let us all go back to our post." said the man with sunglasses. He is Tristan, the dining hall supervisor and considered as Ivan's best buddy. Among their co-worker, Tristan knows that even though Ivan seems talking lightly he was actually serious. Ivan really do everything as long he is being paid 'cause he badly needed money. Tristan go with it so he could cut the topic immediately.
  • Work went out as usual for most of the restaurant workers except for Ivan. After the flow of costumers subsided, he went on to do some errands for Mr. Reyes. The restaurant was already close when he was able to return.
  • "Good evening Jerry! Has everyone gone home already?" Ivan asked Jerry, the new security guard on duty.
  • "No, no one got out yet. They seem like cleaning. I ain't really sure, but no one timed out yet..." Just as Jerry was about to finish what he was saying they heard footsteps coming.
  • "Oh here they are." Jerry continued.
  • "Oh you're already here!" someone said when they saw Ivan talking with security guard.
  • "I just arrive. So what up? Why are you all had not gone home yet? Don't tell you were waiting for me? Did you miss already?" Ivan asked jokingly.
  • "Haha! Kind of!" Everyone laughed then they tap Ivan shoulder and they go in their way home.
  • The truth is everyone agreed to do some cleaning to lighten Ivan's work later.
  • Ivan entered and look around.
  • "Those idiots! Thanks everyone..." Ivan could only muttered when he noticed that almost everything was cleaned and prepared for tomorrow's work.
  • "They just want you to have sometime to relax." suddenly someone said.
  • Ivan look at the person and said. "Tristan, is this your doing?"
  • "Not really. Everybody had the same thought, so we just did it." Tristan said as he hand a bottle of beer to Ivan.
  • "Alas! I may lose my one job once Mr. Reyes see this is possible. Please don't do this again." Ivan said courteously. He is very thankful but he also doesn't want taking advantage of his co-workers. This is a job he had applied and he is being paid for it. So it is him who should do it.
  • Tristan just shook his head. He knows Ivan's character. He never want being favored. So it's useless to argue with him on this matter.
