- I went rigid in my seat, as if staying perfectly still might render me invisible. It was a ridiculous thought, I knew that, but fear isn’t rational. No matter how many times I reminded myself that I was safe, my body refused to listen. Every nerve screamed in panic.
- Theron stepped forward instinctively, placing himself between me and him Zebulon like a human shield made of steel and loyalty. His presence blocked me from view, and I welcomed it. I didn’t want to see Zebulon’s face. I didn’t want his eyes to find mine. And I sure as hell didn’t want to hear his voice.
