• I had no idea how much time had passed since Zhenhai walked out, sealing the steel door behind him. He’d ignored my pleas and left me tied to the chair, claiming it was necessary said if anyone saw me untied, they'd suspect we’d struck a deal. A part of me understood. But understanding did nothing to soothe the raw pain in my limbs or the urgent, rising fear clawing at my chest. I needed to examine myself needed to make sure there were no bruises around my stomach. I could survive broken bones, bruised ribs, even bloodied wrists, but not if something had happened to the baby.
