Chapter 138

  • As if on cue, Andrew slammed the brakes to avoid colliding with a bus, causing my body to lurch forward. I cracked my head against the back of his seat, and my vision began to swirl. I closed my eyes against the disorienting effect, only to see stars bursting behind my eyelids as though I were witnessing animated fireworks. No way; there was no chance I would surrender to this chaos. I struggled to regain focus, but the relentless motion of the car made it increasingly difficult. Why the hell was he driving like this?
  • Peering out of the back window, I tried to clear my blurred vision. It didn't appear that anyone was following us. Why was there no one in pursuit? Where were Xavier, Steve, and Leonard? What had happened to Connor?
  • I couldn't recall seeing him at all back in the courtroom. Although our relationship had never been particularly close, the absence of his presence tightened a knot in my stomach. I desperately hoped that he was safe. I prayed that Steve had successfully gotten my brother out of harm's way. Most importantly, I wished a sense of safety for Xavier, especially after we had been thrust into the chaos of that courtroom.
