Chapter 10

  • Navigating between two bushes, sharp branches jabbed at me, one snagging my shirt. Carefully extracting myself without damage, I broke off the offending branch with precision, an act symbolizing my desire to retaliate against those who inflicted pain. While verbal taunts were bearable, the physical torment compounded with the struggles at home pushed me to my limit.
  • Fatigue weighed heavily on me; I longed for relief. As I navigated the narrow passage between the bushes, thoughts of Leonard, my companion, stirred within me. Should I take him with me? Could he have a better life without me, free from the turmoil of our current existence? The uncertainty of his safety gnawed at me, uncertain of what the future held for him in my absence.
  • Birds chirped overhead, darting from tree to tree as bushes rustled and twigs cracked under the weight of the wildlife inhabitants. A squirrel scurried up a tree, while the glinting eyes of a raccoon peered from its shelter in a tiny shale cave when I disturbed its rest. A bunny hopped into view, adding to the serene woodland scene. Though I knew wolves roamed the woods, they were the natural kind, not shifters like myself. Curiosity piqued my interest, although the elusive nature of these creatures kept them hidden from view.
