Chapter 2 I’m Begging You

  • He angrily looked away before he snapped, “It’s good enough that I’ve given you the title of Young Mistress Fuller. You won’t get anything more out of me. There are some things that—”
  • “Do you really think I care about being Young Mistress Fuller? If you can’t give me what I really want, then please let me go. Let’s just file for divorce.”
  • Eris said the last word softly, but there was a hard edge to her voice that belied her insistence. I can’t spend the rest of my life locked up in this cage.
  • Upon hearing that, Mark did not respond. Instead, he turned on his heels and left without any hesitation.
  • As the front door closed with a heavy thud, it was as if all of her last hopes came crashing down like a deck of cards.
  • The evening breeze continued to blow through the window as the clear skies abruptly darkened and the torrential downpour came not long after.
  • Eris slumped to the ground and the tears that threatened to overwhelm finally did as she sobbed to the sound of the rain.
  • It had been four, lonely years. She had spent more than a thousand days and nights nursing the last of her hopes and dreams, thinking that she was special to him. She had even convinced herself that there would come a day when she would finally win over the ever-impassive and distant man for as long as she held onto her position as Young Mistress Fuller.
  • Unfortunately, she had overestimated her own capabilities and more to the point, she had severely underestimated how heartless Mark could be.
  • The sky above Southbourne City seemed especially dark this evening and the downpour was particularly torrential.
  • While the storm raged on, a gleaming black sedan cruised down the road at high speed with a stifling atmosphere in the vehicle.
  • The man seated at the back seat was looking out the window, his gaze was cold as he took in the pitch-black surroundings of the night sky. Although he was quiet, there was a look of annoyance on his impassive face.
  • Under such dangerous circumstances, it would be wise for the chauffeur to remain silent as he maneuvered the car. He was afraid that he would ruffle the intimidating man’s feathers if he made the slightest of sounds.
  • At this moment, the pleasant melody of a phone’s ringtone pierced the tension in the car.
  • Upon hearing that, the man in the backseat pulled out his phone as his expression softened. His gaze was no longer as dark when he glanced at the caller ID flashing on the screen.
  • “Hello,” he said in a deep, baritone voice. He sounded like a different person, the freezing tone of his voice from before completely gone and replaced by kindness. If Eris were to see Mark now, she would only feel more wounded than she already did.
  • However, his face hardened once more when he heard what was said on the other line and he quickly hung up the call. Then, he anxiously snapped at the chauffeur, “Head over to Celestial Bay immediately. I have to be there in twenty minutes!”
  • Meanwhile, Eris could feel bile rising in her throat and there was a faraway look in her eyes as she felt herself drifting out of consciousness. Mark doesn’t want me. He won’t give me a second look even after I’ve shamelessly stripped down in front of him.
  • A self-deprecating chuckle escaped from her as she swayed and stumbled barefoot out of the luxurious cage that was the villa with a bottle of liquor that she drank halfway in her hand.
  • Seeing as he didn’t want any part of her body, then she would personally destroy it. It’s not as if he would care all of a sudden, right?
  • The rain was plummeting on her in harsh, grey slates and her scantily clad body swayed as she staggered through the downpour. She looked as though she was moments away from being torn apart by the storm.
  • The semi-sheer nightdress she wore was glued to her frame and it further accentuated her sensual silhouette.
  • Eris began to unsteadily drag her feet across the empty street. Her head was heavy and her thoughts were all muddled. When she saw what appeared to be blinding headlights coming her way, she narrowed her eyes to get a better look at it, only to hear the sharp screeching of brakes close to her ears.
