Chapter 14 Shield

  • Mark did not answer her. Instead, he shielded the top of her head in a considerate way while easing her into the car.
  • Eris was in a mess and she stared as Mark joined her in the car.
  • Nevertheless, the warm expression vanished the moment the car door shut behind him.
  • He didn’t even bother looking at her again and he merely instructed Lucas coldly, “Head home.”
  • Lucas acknowledged without commenting further and he started the car engine.
  • Eris, on the other hand, sat motionless on her seat, and she felt as though she was still in a dream.
  • Suddenly, she turned around to look at Mark in shock and confusion. “Why?” Her voice trembled when she questioned him.
  • If everything just now is just a farce, why did he pretend even after walking out of the Fuller Residence?
  • Mark adjusted his sleeves gracefully while turning to the side to glance at her. “You do not have to take it so seriously.”
  • “Mark, just how heartless are you? Perhaps you have given all your feelings to the woman named Natasha?” At that point, Eris’ tears started streaming down her cheeks uncontrollably. He is so cruel! He deliberately gave me hope, but he is also the one who destroyed my dreams ruthlessly with his bare hands. And here I am like a fool, thinking that he’s changed and that he is treating me differently.
  • “Eris, I have reminded you from the beginning that you must not have hopes for me.” Mark’s gaze turned icy-cold and his eyes were shooting daggers at her as he spoke in a menacing tone.
  • Eris closed her eyes gradually while swallowing the bitterness of her tears without answering him.
  • I had unrealistic high hopes. Was I really hoping to be treated like the true Young Mistress Fuller after marrying Mark? Maybe I am just an excuse for him to deal with the Fuller Family and the public, or perhaps I am some sort of tool to him. Eris felt bitter after coming to that conclusion, so she inhaled deeply while choosing to stay silent.
  • The two of them remained silent throughout their journey home.
  • After entering the house, Eris locked herself in her room and refused to see Mark.
  • Nevertheless, he didn’t mind at all. He went into his study alone and stayed there for the rest of the day.
  • They did not speak with each other again for the entire night.
  • The next morning, something rocked the entire Hampwick City—the news that Aces Group’s Director Fuller had secretly got married flooded the front pages of the entertainment news.
  • In the end, a phone call woke Eris from her sleep.
  • She checked the caller ID but saw that it was an unknown number. After a moment of hesitation, she answered the phone call anyway.
  • “You might want to have a look at the front page of today’s entertainment news,” a deep and husky man’s voice greeted her from the other end of the line. She was familiar with this voice and she knew that it was none other than Liam.
  • “The front page of today’s entertainment news?” Eris sat up on the bed while rubbing her dry and weary eyes, her tone suspicious.
  • The newspapers would be sent over on a daily basis and they would be placed on the magazine rack in the dining hall. However, she rarely read them. Well, since Liam told me to read the news, I am sure it’s something I might find interesting.
  • Moments later, Eris made her way downstairs curiously to pick up today's latest newspaper. Then, she flipped to the entertainment section.
  • Her mind buzzed loudly when she saw the photos splashed underneath the headline.
  • It was only then that she finally understood the reason for Mark’s sudden intimate and gentle actions. It turns out he was just planning on shoving me to the front as his shield.
