Chapter 9 What Do You Want Me to Do?

  • Mark’s words came out of the blue and it stunned her for a moment.
  • With hints of puzzlement in her eyes, she gazed at him, wondering if he was speaking the truth.
  • They had been married for four years yet she had never met Mark’s family, not even once.
  • It was known to the public that Mark was married but nobody knew who he was married to. And today, he actually wants to take me to meet his parents?
  • Erin suddenly scoffed and retorted, “Mark, what else do you want from me? What do you want me to do?” Truth was, she was on the brink of falling apart emotionally.
  • “Get some rest. I will arrange for the driver to come and pick you up tomorrow,” he said nonchalantly and turned to leave without giving her any explanation.
  • The enraged Eris grabbed a pillow on the bed and hurled it in the direction of the door as she shouted, “Mark Fuller, you b*stard!” The pillow then hit the door with a thud and fell onto the floor.
  • The sound did not make Mark, who had walked away by that time, pause his footsteps at all. However, standing at the door, he could vaguely hear Eris’ hysterical cursing, but this side of her made him feel that she was incredibly real.
  • He frowned. He was resistant toward the strange emotions that suddenly emerged inside him, and it caused him to involuntarily quicken his step.
  • It was June now and the weather in Hampwick City changed as quickly as a woman's mood.
  • One minute the sun was shining brightly and the next it was raining cats and dogs.
  • Eris stood for six whole hours by the window in a thin hospital gown without moving even a muscle.
  • Sounds of footsteps echoed from the door, but the visitor seemed to have no intention to disturb her and stood at the door.
  • “You think that I’m being ridiculous, don’t you?” Even without looking back, Eris could tell who the visitor was based on the faint scent itself.
  • It was none other than Liam. Although they had only met once, the comforting scent on him left a deep impression on her.
  • “You love him very much,” he said after a fleeting silence.
  • “Yes. I love him more than I love myself,” she admitted bitterly.
  • She turned around at that. Her long hair billowed in the wind that blew into the ward and coupled with her pale face, it made her seem fragile.
  • Upon seeing that, Liam felt as if something was gently poking at his heart. “Why?”
  • “I was only 17 years old when I first met him, and that was probably the most miserable time of my life. My father married a woman and they accused me of being shameless and seducing my own father. The word spread to my school and everyone looked at me with disdain. No matter how hard I tried to explain, nobody believed me.” Upon recalling her darkest past, her body trembled uncontrollably.
  • It was a past that she had never wanted to look back on for the rest of her life. Yet, it was one of the best memories that she had ever had as well. If it hadn’t been for that incident, she might never have met Mark. Knowing him was the only light that ever appeared in her life that was filled with darkness.
  • Liam’s brows were knitted into a frown and it was as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
  • Unfazed by the shocked look on his face, she continued indifferently, “At that time, I was bullied by the teachers and students in school. They threw all sorts of disgusting things at me, called me a shameless sl*t and even attempted to get me expelled from school. Lying on the floor, I felt so desperate and devastated that I even thought of taking my own life. It was at that moment that Mark showed up, and it was him who saved me from the depressingly devastating situation.”
  • “Perhaps your feelings for him are only gratitude but not love?” Liam asked tentatively after a momentary silence.
  • Eris shook her head. “You don’t understand. It has been 10 years. I’ve loved him for 10 years. Do you think that I can’t tell gratitude and love apart after spending 10 years with him?”
  • “Do you wish for him to fall in love with you?”
