• Following the GPS route, I guided the van off the smooth highway and onto a rough gravel path that cut through the heart of the forest. Towering trees surrounded us on every side, their branches thick enough to blot out the morning sun. Somewhere beyond them lay Ivory Fangs, the pack I had only heard stories about. My chest tightened with anticipation—I wanted to meet these wolves properly before heading out to search for Briana.
• The drive was slow, partly because of the uneven ground, but mostly because of the wolves running alongside us. From my seat behind the wheel, I could feel their eyes on me. Their gazes weren’t curious or welcoming—they were sharp, hostile, like they already knew something I didn’t.
