Chapter 9 Schadenfreude
- It was late at night.
- It was time to sleep, but Rebecca couldn’t sleep at all.
- She was very nervous.
- She knew there were definitely more good people than bad ones in the world, but she had only known Nathan for one day.
- Besides, the information they had claimed that Nathan had some mental illness, so what was she going to do if he suddenly went out of control?
- Nathan was lying on the floor and he could sense the anxiety through Rebecca’s breathing.
- “You don’t have to put a pair of scissors under your pillow,” Nathan suddenly said. “Don’t worry and just sleep. Goodnight.”
- Nathan then closed his eyes.
- Rebecca’s heart dropped and she took her hand out from under the pillow.
- She bit her lip gently. How did Nathan know she had placed a pair of scissors there?
- “He won’t hurt me.”
- For some reason, Rebecca was more and more confident of that.
- Thus, she relaxed, closed her eyes, and fell asleep.
- The night passed uneventfully.
- Rebecca woke up the next day, and realized she had slept pretty well. Nathan was already eating breakfast when she walked out of the room.
- Instead, it was Celia who had bloodshot eyes. She obviously hadn’t slept well.
- “Hurry and eat your breakfast. Mom woke up super early to prepare it,” Nathan urged, not at all shy about helping himself around the house.
- When she saw Rebecca head for the bathroom, Celia quickly ran in after her.
- “Last night, did he…”
- “Nothing happened, Mom.”
- Rebecca blushed. “He slept on the floor and didn’t touch me.”
- After saying that, Rebecca found herself thinking in a different direction.
- Should she praise Nathan for being gentlemanly, or could it be that she wasn’t charming enough?
- Then again, that wasn’t possible. She had been the prettiest girl around since she was young. If she burnt all the love letters she received, the fire would probably burn an entire night.
- Celia was relieved to hear that.
- She was secretly hoping to wait for an ideal time to separate Rebecca and Nathan, so they could live separate lives.
- “Come on. I’ll send you to work,” Nathan offered once he had finished his breakfast.
- “No need. I’ll go by myself.”
- Rebecca advised, “You’d better stay at home. It’s dangerous outside.”
- What if Finn secretly attacked Nathan?
- “Don’t worry. They wouldn’t dare do anything to me.”
- Nathan frowned as he saw Rebecca push her electric scooter out.
- A scooter, huh? She’s the granddaughter of the Lamberts, yet her standard of living is so low.
- “Thank you, then.”
- Rebecca felt bad to reject him, so she let Nathan ride the scooter while she sat behind him. That way, she wouldn’t have to endure the cold wind in her face.
- Somehow, this feeling was a little different.
- At Lambert Corporation’s main entrance, over a hundred employees were already standing at the door, waiting to receive Rebecca.
- However, the anger and displeasure on everybody’s faces was clear as day.
- They had only gotten the notice at one or two in the morning that they had to be in office an hour earlier to receive Rebecca.
- Why should they do that anyway?
- To make matters worse, they had heard rumors about Rebecca having an affair with the infamous Yuvan, and she was intentionally showing off to Lambert Corporation!
- Never mind that the company could face tremendous losses, she even decided willfully that she wouldn’t go to work since she didn’t want to.
- Even Quincy, her uncle and CEO, had to beg her to return to work!
- She had gone too far!
- How could there be such a person?
- The anger among the employees was increasing by the second.
- Quincy stood in front and could feel the rage from the employees. That was exactly the effect he wanted.
- He didn’t believe Rebecca could still stay in Lambert Corporation after ruffling all her coworkers’ feathers!
- Once she had signed the contract, she would have to leave quietly.
- “Have you called Mr. Hansen?” Quincy asked.
- “I did. When I said Rebecca would be here, he said he’d drop by personally.”
- Finn was filled with jealousy.
- When he went to get the contract signed, he didn’t even get the chance to see Yuvan. But now that Rebecca was the one representing them, the latter decided to make a trip to their company.
- Ha. This sl*t Rebecca sure has a trick or two, huh? Whatever. I’ll use this chance to let the entire company see her true colors!
- Nathan was riding the scooter, and as the pillion rider, Rebecca had nowhere to place her hands and could only gently hold onto Nathan’s clothes.
- “Well, well, well. I wasn’t expecting this.”
- From afar, Nathan could see that Quincy had brought a large group of employees to stand at the entrance with him, and a glint of mischief flashed across his face.
- Oh, Quincy… You truly don’t know what's good for you.
- Rebecca alighted and was immediately shocked by what she saw.
- Wasn’t it supposed to be only Quincy waiting for her? What was the entire company doing out here?
- Suddenly, she felt claustrophobic.
- Finn threw a glance at his secretary and she immediately shouted, “Welcome back, Ms. Lambert!”
- The next moment, the entire group of employees shouted the same thing in unison.
- Rebecca could sense that their voices were filled with anger, displeasure and even disdain.
- After standing for so long in the cold, anybody would be unhappy too.
- However, she never expected that Quincy would make such an arrangement.
- “Are you happy now, Rebecca?”
- Quincy was full of smiles, but the tone of his voice sounded strange to her.
- It was as if Rebecca was the one who had forced him to do all this, and they had no choice but to obey.
- Rebecca’s face started to redden. She felt trapped, but she didn’t know how to explain herself.
- Is there even a point in explaining myself? Everyone looks like they’re about to tear me to pieces!
- Nathan, on the other hand, nodded his head and looked at Quincy. “I suppose I’m quite happy. You’ve done pretty well.”
- Those words made Quincy furious.
- What did Nathan mean by that?
- Why did it sound like he was praising a pet?
- Quincy wanted to say more, but Nathan ignored him and brought Rebecca into the office.
- “Who does he think he is? Does he think he’s some big shot?”
- “He’s so arrogant. No wonder Rebecca turned out like this. Isn’t he just someone who married into the family?”
- “I heard he’s homeless and has mental illness. Who knew Rebecca had such unique taste in men?”
- All the employees started whispering among themselves, and the more they discussed, the angrier they got.
- Initially, they didn’t believe that Rebecca was that awful, especially since many of them had worked with her.
- However, now that they know Rebecca’s useless husband was equally arrogant and even dared to mock Quincy, she’d have to be even more unreasonable, wouldn’t she?
- She was putting on an act all along.
- What a hypocrite!
- Rebecca started tearing up. She wasn’t deaf. The voices weren’t loud, but they still made it to her ears.
- None of the accusations were fair to her, because she hadn’t done any of those things.
- “Don’t worry about what others think,” Nathan said gently. “It’s the people who aren’t as good as you who will try all means and ways to destroy you. Got it?”
- Rebecca looked at Nathan stunned, then she nodded.
- Quincy had even arranged a new office space for her. She had the room all to herself, which was bigger and more luxurious than her previous office.
- Of course, that made the other employees even unhappier.
- Rebecca wanted to turn it down, but Nathan merely opened the door and walked in without a care.
- To him, it was sad that his wife had to use such an office.
- “Dad, I think the entire company hates Rebecca now.”
- Finn was overjoyed thinking about this. “And that lunatic!”
- Quincy smiled coldly. He had plenty of ways to deal with people like that, and Rebecca was merely a small fry.
- “Is Mr. Hansen here yet?”
- “He should be reaching soon.”
- Quincy nodded. “Later, we’re going to expose Rebecca’s true colors. Do you think Nathan will go crazy and beat Mr. Hansen to death when he finds out his wife has already been sullied by Mr. Hansen?”
- There was a gleeful look on both father and son’s faces.
