Chapter 2 Because You Are My Wife

  • When she heard this voice, Rebecca trembled a little.
  • She looked up at Tobias who was standing in front. Her grandfather had never seemed concerned about her since she was born.
  • Tobias never even looked at her when she was born, just because she was a girl.
  • Now, he was going to choose her husband and make a decision that would affect the rest of her life.
  • Rebecca breathed heavily. She was angry and frustrated and she opened her mouth to protest, but suddenly she saw Willard seated in his wheelchair shaking his head at her, begging her with his eyes.
  • So, she did not say anything.
  • “Ladies and gentlemen, after a selection process by our family, we’ve chosen the best from the pool of ten wonderful applicants to be Rebecca’s husband. I hope everyone here will bless the new couple!”
  • With that, everyone applauded.
  • To Rebecca, this applause was mocking her, or even pitying her.
  • Her eyes were turning red, and she struggled to keep her tears from rolling down.
  • “Dad, this is the man.”
  • Quincy took out a beautifully designed card and passed it to Tobias. The name of their final choice was written on it.
  • They had already done a careful check. The man had no background to speak of, an orphan, over thirty years old, poorly educated, uncultured, no skills, and was homeless—one could say he was a completely useless man.
  • On top of that, he even suffered intermittent bouts of insanity.
  • They heard that the condition was hereditary!
  • If so, once the man married Rebecca, on top of cutting the family business off from Rebecca, even her children could forget about taking any money from the Lamberts.
  • Quincy looked at Rebecca and her family seated in one area, and there was a moment of glee on his face.
  • “Now, I’d like to announce our final choice!”
  • Tobias was long sighted and couldn’t see clearly, so he narrowed his eyes and looked carefully at the card before announcing, “The lucky young man is Nathan Jones!”
  • The moment the name was announced, everybody turned to look at the back door of the hotel.
  • The man was marrying into the family, so of course he could only enter through the back door.
  • Once the back door opened, a young man walked in.
  • Willard and his wife couldn’t bear to look.
  • They knew that Quincy would definitely choose the worst man to be Rebecca’s husband.
  • Rebecca, however, turned to look. She wanted to see who would become her husband.
  • Nathan looked up and met her gaze, but neither said anything.
  • He walked right across the hall and everyone was looking at him. Strangely, the expression on his face conveyed both mockery and schadenfreude.
  • “Nathan, congratulations on becoming Rebecca’s husband and marrying into the Lambert family.”
  • Quincy added, “You don’t have to thank us. Our only wish is that you’ll take good care of Rebecca.”
  • In his opinion, Nathan should be eternally grateful to the Lamberts for giving a homeless orphan like him a home.
  • Quincy walked over to Rebecca and gently took her hand, his face full of care and concern.
  • “Come along, Rebecca.”
  • With that, he led her to Nathan and placed her hand on the latter’s.
  • All the guests started clapping again when they saw this, as if they were attending a blissful engagement ceremony.
  • Sadly, Willard and his family knew that everyone was just laughing at them.
  • By tomorrow, all of Derport would know that a man had married into the Lambert family as Rebecca’s husband, and it was going to be the talk of the town.
  • Rebecca’s mind went blank as if all thoughts had been completely emptied.
  • She couldn’t seem to hear or see anymore and didn’t even know when the banquet ended.
  • Once the banquet was over, Celia immediately left crying, while Willard hastily rolled his wheelchair along after her.
  • At the hotel entrance, a cold wind blew on her face and Rebecca came to her senses.
  • She looked at Nathan who was standing next to her. Her face was expressionless, but her voice was hoarse.
  • “Mr. Nathan, I don’t blame you.”
  • She quietly continued, “You’re to be pitied too.”
  • Nathan was ten years older than her, so it seemed appropriate to address him as such.
  • Nathan didn’t say anything.
  • In fact, he hadn’t said a word all day.
  • The person in front of him was that little girl from fifteen years ago, and she was still as kind as ever.
  • She tolerated the situation and withstood the bullying just so her parents could live happily.
  • “Ah, my dear cousin Rebecca, congratulations!”
  • Suddenly a man walked out from the entrance and clasped his hands together as he smiled. “Congratulations on getting such an outstanding husband!”
  • He intentionally emphasized the word “outstanding”, and said it with great sarcasm.
  • Rebecca frowned and bit her lips. She looked at Finn Lambert and clenched her fists.
  • “My father and the rest of the family worked hard for your marriage,” Finn said with a sigh. “Now that it’s all settled and you have found someone, Uncle Willard can be at peace too.”
  • Not caring about Rebecca going pale in the face, Finn turned to glance at Nathan.
  • The useless man before him was found by his father, Quincy, and when he thought about the information they had on him, he couldn’t resist laughing.
  • A man could be this useless, huh?
  • “Hello, my new cousin-in-law. Now that you’ve married into the Lamberts, you had better be nice to Rebecca,” Finn gleefully continued. “You should have kids soon, too. It will make Grandpa happy. No matter what your kid looks like, or how intellectually disabled he is, the Lamberts can afford to raise him.”
  • Rebecca couldn’t stand it anymore. “Finn, are you done talking?”
  • “Rebecca, I’m just giving my blessings to you two,” Finn replied. “Grandpa has also said that he hopes you guys will have kids soon. I think you can complete this mission tonight.”
  • If they do have an intellectually disabled kid, that’d be even funnier!
  • “You!”
  • Rebecca lifted a hand and Finn’s face immediately darkened.
  • “What? Do you want to hit me?”
  • Rebecca bit her lips, angry and indignant.
  • If she hit the eldest grandson of the Lamberts, her family would most likely be chased out of the house the next day!
  • To her grandfather, only grandsons were bona fide members of the Lambert family. She, unfortunately, was not eligible.
  • Finn became even more gleeful when he saw Rebecca put her hand down.
  • Since they were young, he had always been the one to bully Rebecca. There was no way she could take advantage of him.
  • “I’m doing this for your own good, yet you can’t appreciate my good intentions,” Finn said with a loud, intentional sigh, “Your father has been paralyzed for so many years, and your family would’ve starved to death long ago if the Lambert family didn’t support you. Now that we’ve taken so much effort to find you a husband, you’re still ungrateful and even want to hit me. If Grandpa knew about this, the consequences would be dire…”
  • Rebecca started shaking.
  • She looked at Finn with great fury. How could a person be that shameless?
  • She turned to leave, but Finn blocked her way again.
  • “Rebecca, this is Grandpa’s decision. If you’re unhappy with it, feel free to tell him.”
  • Rebecca started crying, her indignation and anger having been pushed to the limit.
  • “What do you want to do?”
  • Nathan suddenly broke his silence.
  • Rebecca lifted her head and looked at Nathan before blurting out, “I want to give him a tight slap!”
  • Smack!
  • She had just finished talking when a loud slap suddenly rang out. Finn held his face and didn’t even have time to shout as he collapsed to the ground.
  • He only managed to react when he felt a burning sensation coming from his face. He had gotten slapped!
  • On top of that, it was Nathan who slapped him!
  • Finn was stunned, and so was Rebecca.
  • Why did Nathan have the guts to hit Finn? He’s just a man who has married into the family!
  • “You…”
  • Rebecca’s face paled immediately from fright.
  • Finn wanted to kill Nathan right there and then!
  • “Why did you listen to me?” Rebecca murmured.
  • “That’s because you’re my wife now,” Nathan replied.
