Chapter 14 A Favor

  • “Ma’am, what were you and my mother chatting about?” Nathan asked.
  • The neighbor’s face reddened and she waved her hands. “Oh, it’s nothing. Nothing at all.”
  • She quickly vanished after saying that. She had initially intended to poke more fun at Celia’s family since she had been scolded after they rejected the man she introduced to them. But now, she no longer dared to.
  • That man working as a civil servant only earned four or five thousand a month. He’d probably never be able to drive such an expensive car in his life.
  • Celia merely stood there in shock. Willard’s mouth was wide open too, and couldn’t speak.
  • Neither of them could believe it.
  • “This car…”
  • Celia took a deep breath. She thought Rebecca was kidding.
  • She didn’t think Nathan could afford it, and she also knew Rebecca couldn’t.
  • “Where’s the scooter?”
  • Willard realized Rebecca’s scooter was missing and quickly asked about it. They had spent more than two thousand on it.
  • “The car dealership was having a trade-in promotion, so we traded it in for a new vehicle.”
  • Rebecca’s face was all red because she was terrible at lying, but Nathan was very natural as he replied without batting an eyelid.
  • She nearly fell when she heard this.
  • Which dealership would allow customers to trade a scooter in for a BMW?
  • Willard didn’t believe it, and neither did Celia. They weren’t stupid folks.
  • “Actually, there was a lucky draw…” Rebecca tried hard to think of how to spin a realistic story, but she really couldn’t lie.
  • “Nathan bought it!” she finally said it out loud.
  • It was much easier to just tell the truth.
  • Celia looked strangely at Nathan, and she seemed to believe it.
  • Her new son-in-law had surprised her from the first day he stepped into the house.
  • He had stood up for her and slapped Finn, protecting their entire family from the very beginning. Even though she had not accepted Nathan, she wasn’t a cold-hearted person.
  • “All right. No need to explain to us.”
  • Celia waved it off. Her heart felt much better after seeing how that irritating neighbor had to shut up.
  • She looked at Nathan intently but didn’t say anything. Then, she pushed Willard back to the house.
  • “Mom believed it?” Rebecca asked softly.
  • “Does it matter?”
  • From afar, he had seen how that neighbor was clearly making things difficult for Celia. Therefore, there was no way he’d be polite in return. He wanted to get back at her for Celia.
  • He wouldn’t allow anyone to bully his mother-in-law either.
  • “Come on, let’s go home and eat,” Nathan said.
  • Celia’s cooking was pretty good, or at least that was what Nathan thought.
  • He had travelled around the world and eaten all sorts of delicacies. He’d even eaten at places where a single meal easily cost a million, but he’d never eaten home-cooked food.
  • When she saw Nathan eat like he hadn’t eaten in years, scoffing down everything that was on the table, Celia felt her brows twitch. Wow. Is my cooking really that delicious?
  • “Nathan, let me ask you a question.”
  • After so long, it was Willard who broke the silence. “That car… Did you really buy it?”
  • He still couldn’t believe it. It was nearly half a million!
  • “Yes. It’s just a car, though. There’s no need to be so surprised,” Nathan replied without even lifting his head. “Dad, after your legs recover, I’ll buy you one too.”
  • This statement made the entire house go silent instantly.
  • Nathan now looked up and saw helplessness and hopelessness on Willard’s face. Celia’s eyes were red and teary, while Rebecca sighed sadly.
  • “My legs…” Willard laughed bitterly and shook his head.
  • There was no chance that he would recover. He was now a useless man for the rest of his life.
  • “I know a doctor who’s an expert in this area. He should be able to do something.”
  • Nathan’s words made Willard look up.
  • No. Wait a minute… Nathan is just a homeless man. What experts could he know? This guy seems pretty honest, but he also sure loves to brag.
  • “Really?” Rebecca, on the other hand, couldn’t help but ask.
  • She knew Nathan was no ordinary man. Even though she only knew him for two days, Nathan had not hidden everything from her, and had displayed bits of what he was capable of.
  • “Of course. He’s now busy overseas, but once he’s free, I’ll get him to come to Derport,” Nathan said casually.
  • “R-Really?” Willard asked anxiously.
  • Nathan nodded. “Don’t worry.”
  • Willard became a little worked up, but Celia gently patted his hand and he calmed down.
  • Could this new son-in-law be trusted?
  • After the meal, Willard went back to his room, while Rebecca went to her room to prepare the documents she needed for the afternoon. Nathan sat on the living room couch and watched TV.
  • “Nathan, come here for a while,” Celia said.
  • Nathan walked into the kitchen and saw a knife in Celia’s hands. His face remained calm and there was even a faint smile tugging at his lips.
  • “Are you looking for me, Mom?”
  • Celia couldn’t care less what Nathan called her.
  • She glared at Nathan and asked sternly, “Who on earth are you? What’s your motive in getting close to Rebecca? If you want to hurt her, I’ll fight you even if it costs my life!”
  • Celia was not stupid. Nathan looked nothing like a homeless, and he most certainly didn’t look like the stereotypical weakling that would decide to marry into his wife’s family.
  • On the contrary, Nathan was very strong and domineering! He had even casually bought a car worth a few hundred thousand. How could he be a homeless man?
  • “Mom, I can promise you that I have no ill intentions toward Rebecca, you, or Dad,” Nathan calmly replied. “I want to be by Rebecca’s side to protect her, so that she doesn’t get bullied by others.”
  • Celia was still glaring at Nathan and didn’t say anything for a long time.
  • “Why?” she finally asked after several moments.
  • “She saved my life before.”
  • Nathan took a deep breath, his memories returning to the time fifteen years ago. “There are some things I can’t tell you now, but please trust me. When the time is right, you’ll know everything.”
  • Creak.
  • One of the room doors opened and Celia quickly kept the knife away. She whispered, “I’ll trust you for the time being, but you mustn’t touch Rebecca. Don’t ruin her!”
  • Nathan nodded.
  • “Got all your documents?”
  • Nathan walked out of the kitchen. “Let’s go, I’ll send you to the office.”
  • He then pushed Rebecca out of the door and sent her to Lambert Corporation.
  • At Lambert Corporation’s CEO office, Quincy’s expression was cold.
  • “Found anything yet?”
  • “Yes.” Finn smiled coldly. He had spent half a million to get the answer from one of Yuvan’s subordinates.
  • “Before Yuvan struck it rich, he was also a homeless guy and almost starved to death. But Nathan gave him half of his bun and saved him. They had both once lived under the bridge together and can be considered acquaintances. Yuvan was just returning him a favor.”
  • Quincy was indignant.
  • It was hard for him to accept that it wasn’t Rebecca who had slept with Yuvan, but it was because of that useless Nathan who married into the family!
  • “I can’t believe it. Look who you’ve picked!” Quincy shouted angrily.
  • As it turned out, Nathan was selected by Finn. The latter had purposely chosen a homeless man who was mentally unstable, but who could have known about his past with Yuvan?
  • “Relax, Dad. For people like Yuvan, they won’t bother with their old acquaintances after they’ve struck it rich. Once he’s returned the favor to Nathan, that’d be the end of it!”
  • Finn continued viciously, “After Rebecca and her family have used up this one chance, who else will help them now?”
  • Quincy narrowed his eyes. He knew people like Yuvan only too well. They were cruel and vicious in secret, but made themselves look good on the surface. Returning a favor to a person he knew when he was homeless might even make him look better.
  • However, that was about it.
  • He was determined to make Nathan pay for embarrassing him, and he was going to make him pay more than what he suffered!
  • “Have you arranged everything at the factory?”
  • “All done!” Finn laughed coldly. “Rebecca is going to regret taking this project back!”
