Chapter 3 Fire Her

  • Rebecca felt like her head had just exploded.
  • She stared in shock at Nathan. She had never expected him to hit someone else for her.
  • To make things worse, the person he hit was Finn, the eldest grandson of the Lamberts!
  • He did it just because I’m his wife?
  • “You’re asking for it!” Finn shouted.
  • The next second, he got up from the ground and threw a punch at Nathan.
  • Nobody had dared to hit him before, and worst of all, it was Rebecca’s husband, a useless man who married into the family.
  • Crack!
  • Alas, Finn’s fist had just reached in front of Nathan when the latter used one hand to grab it. Nathan suddenly exerted some strength, and the next thing Finn heard was a loud crack of his wrist.
  • “Ah!”
  • My wrist is broken!
  • Finn howled in pain.
  • “She’s my wife. Nobody is allowed to bully her from now on,” Nathan said before letting go of his hand.
  • Then, he dragged Rebecca away while she remained shell-shocked.
  • “I’m going to kill you… I’m going to kill you!”
  • Finn held his wrist, the pain nearly killing him.
  • He never expected that the piece of garbage his family found to be a son-in-law would dare to hit him.
  • In any case, Rebecca was doomed, and so was the rest of her family!
  • Finn quickly ran back into the hotel and could not even be bothered to treat his injury.
  • Quincy was still in the hall, chatting with some business partners.
  • “Dad! Dad!”
  • Finn dashed over immediately, and Quincy frowned as his conversation was interrupted.
  • “Since your son has something to discuss with you, we shall talk another time.”
  • With that, the guests took their leave.
  • Quincy scowled. “What a mess. What is it!”
  • “Dad, someone beat me!”
  • Finn clenched his teeth. “Look at my hand, it’s broken!”
  • “Who did this?”
  • Quincy immediately stood up.
  • Even he couldn’t bear to hit his own precious son, so who could be that vicious?
  • Finn gritted his teeth. “Nathan Jones! The one who married into the family for Rebecca!”
  • They had just given Nathan a new lease of life, but instead of being grateful, he laid a hand on Finn.
  • He was just a homeless man, a useless piece of garbage, yet he was already rebelling!
  • Quincy was furious. “That useless man who married into the family?”
  • According to the information they had, Nathan was homeless and completely hopeless. He even had intermittent bouts of insanity, so could that have been the case?
  • “Rebecca told him to slap me, and he really did! My hand was hit so hard that it’s broken now.”
  • Finn’s eyes were red from anger.
  • He had never been so humiliated before!
  • Quincy frowned. “That guy has a mental illness, so perhaps it suddenly acted up.”
  • He immediately ordered someone to get a doctor to treat Finn’s injury. “Don’t provoke crazy people like him. Anyway, Rebecca got Nathan to hit you, huh? Hmph! I won’t let her off easily!”
  • “Dad, throw her out of the family!”
  • That, indeed, was a good excuse to get rid of Rebecca.
  • If Tobias knew about the matter, she and her family would be evicted.
  • After all, who gave them the guts to hit the eldest grandson of the Lamberts?
  • “Rebecca is currently in charge of a project, and it’s at a crucial stage now. In fact, we’ll be signing the contract soon. If we kick her out now, it might affect everything.”
  • One thing was for sure—Rebecca was incredibly good at her work and had clinched several projects in the short span of two years.
  • However, that was precisely why Quincy and his son were so worried. They were afraid that Rebecca would be able to gain a foothold in the company and pose a threat to them.
  • “Dad, since the project is almost good to go, it doesn’t matter who finalizes the contract. Besides, if I’m the one who manages to sign these large projects on, Grandpa would think more highly of me,” Finn continued wickedly.
  • “Kick her out! This family of parasites can all go to hell!”
  • ……
  • Meanwhile, Nathan returned home with Rebecca.
  • The latter remained stunned the whole way back. She had never thought that Nathan would hit someone for her.
  • When she finally snapped back to reality, she began to worry that Nathan’s attack had offended Finn.
  • Knowing that fool’s temper, he’d undoubtedly get back at Nathan.
  • Ding!
  • Rebecca pressed the doorbell, and after some time, Willard opened the door and met his daughter’s gaze with guilt in his eyes.
  • “Rebecca, you’re back.”
  • Willard glanced at Nathan behind her and his face instantly fell. Despite that, he said nothing and nodded. “Come… Come in.”
  • “Do not come in!”
  • Before Nathan could set foot into the house, Celia dashed out, her face still streaked with tears. “Get out! Get out! It’s because of you that Rebecca’s going to become the laughingstock of Derport. You’ve destroyed her! Get out now!”
  • Even as she shouted, her tears continued to fall. She was not willing to let Nathan marry into her family at all.
  • If Nathan were an outstanding man, she might still be able to accept it.
  • The truth, however, was brutal.
  • Not only was Nathan ten years older than Rebecca, but he also had no achievements whatsoever and no house.
  • How could she put up with such a disgraceful man?
  • Nathan wordlessly turned to leave, but Rebecca suddenly grabbed his hand.
  • “Mom, let him in.”
  • If I let Nathan leave now, Finn would surely find someone to kill him. I cannot desert him when he had stood up for me.
  • “Rebecca, he…”
  • “He is now… My husband.”
  • Rebecca bit her lips. The word “husband” was so strange to her, and the mention of it felt like a stab to her heart.
  • Celia’s lips trembled as she shook her head in despair. “I’m washing my hands off of this!”
  • Then, she ran back into her room and slammed the door shut.
  • “Come in,” Rebecca gently said to Nathan.
  • The man promptly nodded and strode into the house that wasn’t considered large.
  • The Lamberts were a third-tier family in Derport, but Rebecca’s house was surprisingly even smaller than the average.
  • “Come with me.”
  • Afraid that Celia would chase Nathan away again, Rebecca led him into her own room.
  • The room wasn’t large, but it was very neat and tidy.
  • Rebecca took out a mattress and blanket from the cupboard and placed them on the floor. Her voice was a little tired as she said, “You’d better not go out for the time being. Finn won’t let you off. Stay in my house. He won’t dare lay a finger on you here.”
  • Rebecca glanced at Nathan. It was difficult to process that she now had a husband.
  • “From now on, you’ll sleep on the floor, and I’ll sleep on the bed. You live your life, and I’ll live mine. Understood?”
  • Nathan said nothing and merely nodded.
  • He knew that Rebecca couldn’t remember him and wouldn’t fall in love with him either. Perhaps she even hated him because he had suddenly become her husband.
  • Deep inside, however, she was still a kind person. She was afraid that Finn would hurt him, so even though it made her uncomfortable, she still wanted to protect him.
  • She’s still so compassionate even after growing up.
  • Nathan started deliberating whether he should take out the sweet wrapper, but after thinking it through, he decided against it.
  • Both of them remained silent and the atmosphere soon became rather awkward.
  • Suddenly, Rebecca’s phone started ringing.
  • Her face turned white as a sheet.
  • “Rebecca, from today onward, you no longer have to report to Lambert Corporation!” Finn uttered arrogantly.
  • “Hmph! My dad has fired you! Your family can slowly starve to death!”
  • With that, he slammed the phone down.
  • Rebecca took a long time to react.
  • I’ve been fired? All because I told Nathan to hit Finn?
  • Since she was young, Finn had constantly bullied her, yet he was never punished for his actions.
  • Needless to say, Rebecca felt like crying from the unfair treatment.
  • Nathan immediately frowned when he saw this.
  • Does Finn Lambert have a death wish?
