Chapter 3

  • Chapter 3
  • Abby’s POV
  • We meet Angel and Sofia at the wedding boutique. They are already there browsing through the selections. To my surprise Sofia has already picked out a couple of gowns that she has liked for me to try on. This is the first time that I will be around Jose’s mom without the men being around. I wonder what type of person she is. When mother and I greet her, she gives me a big hug, while welcoming me to the family. “Hello, my dear it is so nice to see you again. I do hope that you and I can become close and in time hopefully you will consider me a friend, an ally. I know exactly what you are going through. I myself went down the same path you are on now. So, please remember that if you need anything I am just a phone call away.” “Thank you so much Sofia. It means a lot to me to know that you will be there for me.” My mother who is standing next to me smiles at Sofia and nods her head. Angel comes running up to me and embraces me in a huge hug also. We haven’t seen each other since before the announcement of my engagement. When I had asked papa if she could come over his exact words were. “Your future husband doesn’t want you alone with anyone until after the wedding.”
  • The store attendants don’t waste any time in approaching our little circle. I had filled out a form online about all my likes and dislikes so they already had a rack full of dresses that they had pulled. So, they lead us to the dressing room, and I start trying on all their different picks. The ninth gown that I put on I fall in love with. It is a sleeveless princess ball gown, that has a beaded sweet heart neckline. It is white as snow, and made of satin. As soon as I put it on, I know it is the one. When I walk out to show everyone only gasps could be heard. My mom was crying. Now that I had picked out my dress, it was time to pick out Angel’s. Just like before the shop workers had pulled all the colors that I choose for my wedding. Which were purple and teal green. I encourage my mother and Sofia to also pick out the gowns they want to try on. As everyone is busy deciding which ones they want, I scan the store trying to decide on the best and fastest route to the manager’s office. I also take in where exactly all of our guards are posted. There is only two inside with us and the rest outside. I can only hope that they don’t know about the third exit door.
  • I stroll up to my mom and tell her, “I love you so much. Thank you for always being there for me.” A tear falls down my cheek and she wipe it off, and kisses my forehead. The moment has come for me to go. I’m so scared to be caught, but I am even more scared to live a life without love. As all three women of my group go into the dressing room, I ask the store clerk where the bathroom is and she points to the back. Even though I already knew where it was, I had to pretend I didn’t. I thank her and very calmly trudge my way to the back of the store. Once I am there instead of going into the bathroom, I go into the manager’s office right beside it. I turn the knob and it opens. I hurry in and quietly shut the door behind me. I glance around the room, and spot the exit. I rush over and unlock it. I push it open and run out. I take about ten steps to the building right beside the boutique and enter the store thru the side entrance. I find my way to the front door then I slide out onto the busy sidewalk. Thankful that I am far enough down the street so the guards won’t see me.
  • Before I left home, I got all the money that I have stashed away in hopes of one day running away, and brought it with me. I have exactly $4089.00 to my name. Plus, my engagement ring that I can pawn. I hail a cab and give him my destination. “To the train station please, and hurry.” I never have got to come into the city much so I didn’t realize that New York traffic was this busy. I’m like a crack addict in the backseat with my head bobbing every which direction. I’m nervous as hell, and I know the driver is beginning to get uneasy, because he keeps peeking at me through the rear-view mirror. When we finally get to the train depot, I pay the fare and hustle out into the busy station. I buy a ticket for the first departing train, which goes to Chicago. I go to the platform and wait for the train to arrive.
  • I hear the whistle blowing signaling the train is coming in. The realization hits me that I did it I escaped my papa, and Jose both. I get in line with the biggest smile I have ever had on my face. When the line starts moving allowing the passenger’s to come abroad, I pull my ticket out of my small clutch. There is only two people in front of me until it is my turn. Just as I step up to the conductor to hand them my ticket, I feel a hand grab my shoulder. I slowly spin around to see that it is Patrick one of my father’s trusted men. He is shaking his head and has a disappointed expression on his face. He yanks me out of line and drags me back outside. Once we step out of the building is when the real panic sinks in. My fiancé climbs out of the backseat of a blacked-out SUV. I swallow the lump in my throat and my whole body begins to shake. I take that as my cue to start begging Patrick to let me go. “Please don’t do this. Please just take me home I would rather Papa deal with me instead of him. I’m sorry I promise I won’t do it again.” That is all I get out before my future husband is right in front of us. He reaches his hand out and grabs my upper arm, and yanks me toward him. He drags me off to the vehicle he got out of.
