Chapter 6 The Lost Pack
- Elara POV
- I look around the office, and everyone's eyes are on me. I have no idea what they are talking about. My eyebrows furrow together while I try to understand what is being said.
- "Are you sending me away?" I finally ask.
- Mom guides me to the couch and sits down with me. "Of course not," she begins. "But there is something you need to know."
- "Okay," I reply. "You are scaring me."
- She tucks my hair behind my ear and cups my face. "We didn't find you. You were left for us to find."
- "Huh?" I grunt.
- "Lillian," my dad groans. "You are doing this all wrong."
- I look at the triplets. I am waiting for someone to tell me what is going on, but everyone keeps staring at me.
- "What do you know about the Imperial Pack?" My father finally asks.
- "It's a myth like the Lost City of Atlantis. There are a few crazy people that believe it existed, but no one has ever found evidence," I spout out the information I was taught in school.
- The air in the room shifts, and everyone looks uncomfortable. My dad clears his throat and taps his fingers on his desk. I snort with laughter.
- "You believe it was real?" I ask.
- Dad pulls a book out from his desk and opens it to a page. I glance at the book, but the words are written in a language I can't read. There is a white wolf with golden eyes sitting in a field of snow. Behind the wolf is a woman with blonde hair and golden eyes. I inch toward the book and study the picture. I know that wolf. It is the wolf from my dream.
- "The Imperial Pack was a pack of white wolves. Each one had a different ability that was gifted to them by the Moon Goddess herself. They were distinguishable by their light hair and golden eyes," my dad reads from the page.
- He looks up at me before he continues. "Several hundred years ago, some of the werewolf packs believed that the Imperial Pack was getting too strong. They thought they couldn't be trusted because of their supernatural powers. They waged war against the Imperial Pack. The Imperial Pack was peaceful and refused to use their powers during war, and they were wiped from the earth, but not before some escaped to live among the humans."
- I am listening carefully, but I am not putting the pieces together. "What does this have to do with me?"
- Mom squeezes my hand. "I had the pleasure of knowing a descendent of the Imperial Pack. Her name was Leila. She lived among the humans and had a young daughter. One day, she came to me and confided in me who she was and that she was in danger. Someone was hunting her down because they saw her wolf. She asked me to care for her daughter and keep her hidden until the time was right."
- My ears are ringing, and I feel really hot. I want to get to my feet and run from the room, but I am frozen on the couch. "Am I that child?" I manage to ask.
- My mother nods, and tears spring to her eyes. "We tried to save you both," she explains. "But we weren't fast enough."
- A memory hits me like a bolt of lightning. A field of snow covered in red. Large amounts of blood was splattered across the snow, and a woman was lying naked in the middle of it all. I crawled toward her, but before I could reach her, I was scooped up and carried away.
- I push the memory into the recesses of my mind. I never plan on seeing it ever again. Sitting a little taller on the couch, I wipe the tears streaming down my face.
- "I am not a white wolf," I remind everyone. "I am not a wolf of any color. I am an Omega. So, even if I was this woman's child, I would be useless to those looking for me."
- "Not exactly," my father whispers. "White wolves can only shift for the first time in the temple of the Moon Goddess under a full moon. You are not an Omega."
- Nervous laughter bubbles in my chest. "If I am not an Omega, then what am I?"
- "You are a Luna," my mom whispers. "Or you will be when you find your mate."
- Zane falls against the wall and rubs his hand down his face. Zeke is shuffling from side to side awkwardly, but Zeus has a huge smile on his lips.
- "Where is this temple?" I ask sarcastically.
- "We don't know," my father replies. "We only have clues."
- My anxiety is turning into anger with the realization that I have been lied to my whole life. I jump to my feet and ball my fists up at my sides.
- "So, I am supposed to go on some sort of quest to get my wolf?" I shout. "Why would I do that?"
- "You are important," Dad says. "You can bring back the Imperial Pack. It is your destiny."
- I throw my hands in the air. "Why? So, I can be hunted by people that want to kill me? No, thank you. I am happy to live as an Omega."
- "Don't you want to know what the Moon Goddess has in store for you?" Zeke butts in. "Don't you want to meet your mates?"
- My eyes dart angrily in his direction. "First off, I don't care to be some super werewolf with weird powers, and secondly, what makes you think I would have more than one mate? Thirdly, I have no interest in having a mate."
- "Elara," Dad interrupts my rant. "I have reason to believe that those who were hunting your mother have already found you. You aren't safe here anymore."
- "So, I have no choice," I laugh. "What is this? Some dystopian novel where a young girl is sent out to save the world?"
- "You don't have to go alone," Zane chimes in. "I will go with you."
- "We all will," Zeus growls.
- Everyone is looking at me, but I am not ready to face the truth. "I need sleep," I tell them all. "We can talk about this tomorrow."
- No one stops me as I leave the office. My body is on autopilot as I make my way to my bedroom. Suddenly, someone scoops me up and carries me to the triplets room.
- Zane sits me down in the middle of the floor, and they are all looking at me.
- "What?" I snap.
- "You aren't sleeping alone," Zane tells me. "You can sleep in the clubhouse with us."
- "When are you all going to grow up and stop referring to this room as the clubhouse," I chuckle as I look at the three beds. "I am not sleeping on the floor."
- "You can sleep with me," Zane smirks.
- "Fine," I roll my eyes.
- I untie my robe and let it slip from my shoulders. I toss it onto a chair in the corner, and when I turn around, the triplets are staring at me.
- "Don't you have other clothes?" Zeus asks uncomfortably.
- "They are in the car," I mumble. "I will get them in the morning. I just want to sleep."
- I crawl into Zane's bed, and he lays down beside me awkwardly. He is careful not to touch me, but I cuddle up to him anyway. He shifts uncomfortably, but eventually, I drift off to sleep.
