• I could feel Xylene’s grip loosening around my arm. He had held me firmly, but now, his fingers relaxed as he took a small step back. The anger that had bubbled inside me slowly started to settle, and I looked at him, my emotions tangled in confusion and frustration. He had explained things to me, his words soft and careful, and somehow, it made everything feel a little lighter. It didn’t make it all better, but it was a start. I knew what he did was the only option he had in protecting me from miles seeing him. And even though something inside of me kind of wanted it, now that he had done it, it felt strange, almost like a shock to me.
