• “Sophie,” Eric’s voice came through, filled with a touch of hesitation. “I wanted to call and apologize again about everything. I know it wasn’t exactly fair how things ended so abruptly at the firm.”
• Sophie smiled, though Eric couldn’t see it. “It’s not your fault, Eric. You don’t need to apologize. I understand that some things are out of your control.”
• “I appreciate that,” he said, his tone soft. “But still, I feel responsible. Is there anything I can do to help? Maybe I can put in a word for you somewhere, or help you find another position? You’re talented, Sophie, and I hate seeing you go through this.”
