  • “I’m your loyal subject,” I murmured, forcing the words through a tight throat. The lie scraped my tongue raw. My pulse betrayed me — pounding harder with every second Zane stood there. I tried to stay calm, tried not to let him see how much he still got to me. But pretending not to care had become my survival tactic.
  • Zane arched an eyebrow, disbelief shadowing his face. “Loyal subject?” His voice cut through the quiet like a blade. “Funny. I don’t recall loyalty involving running away from your Alpha.”
