- “I’m your loyal subject,” I murmured, forcing the words through a tight throat. The lie scraped my tongue raw. My pulse betrayed me — pounding harder with every second Zane stood there. I tried to stay calm, tried not to let him see how much he still got to me. But pretending not to care had become my survival tactic.
