- I felt the world tilt when Marley spoke—her words a slow blade. My chest went hollow, but I forced my face to be steady. “Why?” I asked, keeping my voice low. “Why kill Alpha Storm?”
- She smiled like a secret and leaned in so close I could hear her breath. “We should get you to the manor,” she murmured, as if she was offering tea rather than confessing murder.
- My mind kept hunting for sense. The blade had been hers; I’d seen it flash. Mr. Thorn’s name slipped into my head and I couldn’t help the bitter curl of accusation that rose in me. Nothing fit together except one ugly possibility: Marley had plotted this. Maybe she’d even used the Blood Moon wolves as cover. For what? For power? For revenge? For something broken inside her that I couldn’t understand?
