- Nathan sat in the waiting area of the hospital, his hands trembling uncontrollably as he rubbed his palms together. The white walls around him seemed to close in, the sterile smell of antiseptic sharp and suffocating. He had been pacing earlier, but exhaustion had pinned him to the seat. His eyes never left the door to the operating room, even after the red light above it had switched off. When the doctor finally emerged, Nathan sprang to his feet, his chest tight with dread.
- “Mr. Shaw?” the doctor asked gently, pulling off his mask. His tone was calm, but his eyes carried the weight of bad news.
