  • The courtroom was a sea of tension as Lisa mounted the witness stand. Her eyes swept the room, resting briefly on Kenneth. He sat at the defense table, his usual impeccable appearance haggard and his eyes hallowed. For a moment, their gazes locked and Lisa saw a flicker of something-fear? Remorse? Hope?-before she tore her eyes away.
  • "Please state your name for the record," the prosecutor started.
  • Lisa Maddock," she answered, attempting to sound steadier than she felt.
