Chapter 69 Narrow Escape!

• Isabel Bellini was a sadist, plain and simple. And the idea of torturing someone as helpless, as utterly at her mercy, as Roxanne, left her enraptured. She visited the little chapel in the house and smiled up at the figurine of Jesus on the cross. She was not pious, but when she was growing up,her father had forced her to live in Italy, with her aunts, who had been devout Catholics. Young Isabel had spent most of her time with them in chapel but she had also found other, devious ways to gratify herself.
• Now, confident that Vaan Dyke would not be back for a fortnight, she began to exert her authority, all from the wheelchair. That was one part of the plan which she was not about to reveal. Poor Nurse Steinberg who had been watching her suspiciously, and had discovered her secret, mysteriously fell down the stairs, suffering a major concussion the day after Van Dyke left. Isabel had no qualms as the woman was taken away in an ambulance. She had merely pushed the interfering old biddy down the stairs because she was clever enough to suspect that Isabel was no longer an invalid.
