  • I moved to stand by the barred window. The bars were thick, pitted with rust, and spaced just wide enough for me to rest my cheek against, feeling the chill of iron. The house I was in was probably near the sea, I thought as I looked out, to see lights twinkling in the distance, the waves moving, rippling in the distance. Learning my forehead against the barred window of my gilded prison, I looked out bleakly.
  • The sea lay far below, a restless, heaving sheet of grey-blue. I could not see the shore itself, only the spray rising when waves hit the rocks. It was dark now, a pre-dawn darkness that cloaked the world. But I was willing to bet that when sunlight broke through clouds, the water flashed like splintered glass.
