Chapter 4 The Next Mr Right?

  • “Who is it?” Kyle asked when I picked up my phone;
  • I said, “I am not sure; it is an unknown number. Should I answer it?” Kyle nods
  • while eating his burger, so I answered the call.
  • “Hello? Who is this?” is the first thing I said.
  • “Hi! This is James, the one who brought you to the
  • hospital last night. Do you remember me?”
  • Kyle looks at me; I am not sure if he heard who is
  • on the line, but  I told him it was
  • James, the one who brought me to the hospital last night. He shrugged and just
  • focused on his burger.
  • “Hi! How are you? I just got home,” I said to James
  • on the phone.
  • “That is great,” he replied, “I visited the
  • hospital today, but they told me you are discharged already.” James continued.
  • “Yea, I am at home now. I am feeling better. Thank
  • you for your help last night.” I said on the phone while trying to fix my meal
  • and start to eat.
  • All this time, Kyle seems indifferent. He focuses
  • on his burger; I wonder who starved him for days. It is this thought that made
  • me chuckle a little.
  • “Are you laughing at me?” James’ playful voice
  • sends me back into reality while I seem to daydream for some seconds.
  • “Huh? Oh, I’ am sorry. I think there was a
  • connection problem a while back. What were you saying again?” This was me
  • trying to get away from my split-second daydreaming.
  • “haha, I will see you next time. Have a great day
  • for now,” James said.
  • “Thanks, have a great day too,” I responded
  • automatically.
  • When I put down the phone, I just realized what he
  • said.
  • I looked at Kyle and told him, “Hey, he said he
  • will see me next time. Do you know what that means?” Kyle did not answer. He
  • just looked at his Rolex GMT Master II Ice; was that too specific? I memorized
  • it because Kyle seems to grab every opportunity to tell me the brands and
  • models of the things he uses. I am not sure if he is trying to intimidate me or
  • he being proud is just in his blood.
  • “I’m going now,” This is Kyle’s only response to my
  • question.
  • “Huh? Isn’t it too early?” I responded.
  • “No, I have so many things to do, unlike someone I
  • know who is only concerned about finding his next Mr. Right,” Kyle said while
  • trying to remove something from his shirt. However, it looks entirely clean for
  • me.
  • “What are you mumbling about?” I retorted.
  • “Nothing, before I forget, I had some fruits
  • delivered in here.  You are sickly
  • because all you know to eat is ramen. Don’t worry, I paid it already; I know
  • you are poor.” Kyle said teasingly while tapping my head.
  • I slapped his hands away from my head and said, “Hey!
  • I am not poor. I may not be as rich as you, but I have a big fan base on my web
  • novels; I am on Top 10, which pays a lot! hmp!” I rebutted.
  • “Yea, a whole damn lot for a cup of ramen. Haha,”
  • He said, laughing.
  • “Yaa! Get lost! You Annoying, Jerk! “I know he is
  • teasing me, but I am not a good sport when it comes to these things. I like
  • teasing people, but I do not like being teased, arent we all?  Kyle drove off on his red LaFerrari; how I
  • wish I could also afford that kind of car, but the best I can have is a Toyota
  • Yaris Hybrid.
  • “The time now is ten pm” I was a bit startled when
  • my phone reminded me of the time. I looked around and noticed that it was
  • already very dark outside. I removed my anti-radiation glasses and walked
  • towards the big window adjacent to my working table made of Narra wood on a
  • chestnut stain. I opened the window, then closed it again because of smug; the
  • night is pretty as long as you don’t get to immersed to open your window
  • because what’s waiting is only dust and dirt, what a disappointment.  I walked away from the window and asked
  • Google to open the lights in the room. “I’m hungry,” I mumbled and hastily opened
  • my refrigerator; it is a good thing that Kyle bought me fruits today because,
  • if not, I will resort to eating ramen again; what is wrong with ramen? Ramen is
  • delicious; it is my favorite type of “men,” haha. I chuckled at this idea while
  • putting three grapes into my mouth.
  • “If you are that hungry, why eat just now?” That
  • was Kyle; I did not expect him to be here at this hour. I was surprised by his
  • sudden appearance that I choked on a grape.
  • “Yaa, Yaa! That is what I am talking about.” Kyle
  • came running towards me and gave me a Heimlich maneuver; good thing I have a
  • doctor as a friend. He gave me a glass of water, and when I was done drinking
  • it, I asked him what is he doing here.
  • “I just want to check if you are still alive; you
  • have a lot of debt to me, so I need to check if I can sell your liver out just
  • in case I found you here dead,” He said it too seriously with psychotic looks
  • on his eyes that for me it is not funny at all, even if I know this is just a
  • weird joke. Kyle is one of those people who will never be able to work in the
  • industry of comedy.
  • “YAA! It is not funny at all. Good thing you are
  • good at studying because you will never be able to earn a living as a comedian.
  • Haha,” I teased him.
  • He was about to say something when my phone
  • rang.
  • “You are getting famous nowadays; whenever I am
  • here, someone calls you,” He said in an annoyed tone while biting the apple on
  • his hand; I did not notice that he got fruit in the fridge.
  • “Whatever” is the only thing I can say because, for
  • some reason, he is right. I am not even sure what is up with this phenomenon.
  • “Hello?” I answered the call without looking at who
  • it was.
  • “Hi! How are you? Can you step out for a while? I
  • have something to give you.” I was confused by the instructions, so I looked at
  • who it was, it was James.
  • “Hi! James, What is it?” I confusingly asked.
  • “I will just hand out something, don’t worry, I won’t
  • bit,” he said playfully.
  • “Okay,” I responded. I hung up the call and was
  • about to go out when Kyle held my arms to stop me.
  • “Where are you going?” He asked me in a serious
  • tone.
  • “I am going ou...what are you doing?” I am trying
  • to respond to Kyle’s question when he holds my shoulders firmly and pin to the couch.
  • He then said, “I’ll handle this,” Kyle washed his hands, put on his coat, and
  • went out in a very manly manner that made me almost forgot he is gay.
  • I was trying to see what was happing outside, but
  • since my front door is far from the gate, all I could do was to watch them from
  • my balcony window. I do not know what is happening, but I can feel a certain
  • tension; I think this is Kyle’s way of protecting his best friend.
  • Kyle came back after around 30 minutes, and I
  • hurriedly asked him what happened? His response is to put a pile of papers on
  • my work desk and then say, “lock your doors, don’t go out. I am leaving.”
  • “YAA! What happens? Why are you not answering me?”
  • I shouted while sitting on the couch, and he was finding his way out. He just
  • slammed the door and drove off without saying a single word.
  • “Annoying Jerk,” I mumbled under my breath after I
  • threw one of the throw pillows on the couch; I guess I finally found the reason
  • why it is called that way.  Since Kyle
  • did not tell me anything, I  just looked
  • at the paper he left on my working table; I thought I might find some clues
  • there, but I didn’t; I was more confused when I checked Kyle’s bundles of paper
  • left.
