- I slammed the study door behind me, and the faint click did little to alleviate the strain in my belly. I could still feel Melissa's gaze on me, her questions hanging in the air like a noose around my throat. Damn that. She wasn't supposed to be in the middle of anything, especially not like this.
- The hallway extended front of me, quiet but for the muted murmurs from the kitchen. I hesitated, running my hand through my hair, trying to think—trying to get ahead of this problem before it exploded in our faces. The black cars outside were not only a message. They were a promise, and I wasn't sure how long we had before it became a reality.
