• I put on my suit, the responsibility of the day bearing down on my shoulders. This was not your typical meeting. It was the gathering. The most powerful people in my father's empire, known as the stakeholders, would choose whether to follow me or look for another leader. I saw the reflection of a man caught between his past and an unwelcome future he couldn't escape as I adjusted my tie in the mirror.
• Melissa and her mother were sitting in the living room when I walked over. Their queries and unsaid worries followed me with their eyes. I had to reassure them, but all I could offer was a resolute determination to carry this through.
