Chapter 1 The Most Rebellious Thing She's Ever Done

  • Samantha Yeager had just gotten married today, but her groom never showed up. She glanced at the empty room, her face turning white as a sheet. She felt humiliated and resentful, but what could she do anyway? Her life had always been in the hands of others since she was born, including when it came to her marriage.
  • She only married into the Bakers because of her father's greed. Her grandfather used to work as Philip Baker's chauffeur before he died in an accident in order to save the latter's life. When the small company run by her family was faced with bankruptcy because of huge debts, her calculating father knew he'd use up the favor that the Bakers owed his late father if he were to ask them for money, so he came up with a self-serving solution by requesting Henry, Philip's grandson, to marry her. That way, he'd be able to receive a king's ransom from the wealthy Baker Family as a betrothal gift while becoming related to them by marriage.
  • For the sake of appearances, the Bakers couldn't turn down his request either. However, Henry was extremely dissatisfied with such a marriage, so he didn't show up at their wedding, which was only attended by members of both families. Not only that, but he also forbade her from presenting herself as his wife in public.
  • No one ever asked her whether she was a willing participant during the whole thing.
  • Keeping her bright eyes open, she fluttered her curly eyelashes to conceal a hint of stubbornness. Just when she was at a loss for how to spend her wedding night, she received a text message from her colleague asking her to help cover the latter's shift.
  • She took a taxi to the hospital before changing out of her evening dress into a doctor's white coat.
  • Suddenly, the door to the on-call room was pushed open with a loud bang. Just when she wanted to look up, she heard the flick of a switch. With that, the lights in the room went off, making her flesh creep. "Who—"
  • Before she could speak, she was pinned to her desk, causing everything on it to fall all over the floor with a loud clatter. Someone held a sharp knife to her throat and threatened, "Keep quiet!"
  • All she could see in the dim light was the man's bloodied face and his stern eyes, but she could tell from the overpowering smell of blood assailing her nose that he was wounded.
  • Perhaps because of her profession, she had learned to retain her composure when something happened. She quietly bent her knee in an attempt to attack the man's vulnerable spot, but as soon as she moved, he realized what she was up to and clamped her legs between his with all his might.
  • "I saw him coming this way!"
  • Some people's footsteps could be heard approaching the door. Judging by the noise they made, they were going to open the door very soon.
  • In desperation, the man bent down and kissed Samantha on the lips.
  • Samantha fought back, only to be startled for a moment when she managed to push the man away with little effort. He didn't hurt me with the weapon in his hand, eh?
  • Just then, they heard the sound of the doorknob being twisted with a click.
  • Samantha nerved herself and threw back her head, kissing the man in return while throwing her arms around his neck on her own initiative. Feigning composure, she said in a quavering voice, "I can save you."
  • The man's Adam's apple bobbed up and down his throat for a moment. The next instant, he seized control of the situation. Breathing warm air into her ear, he said in a deep and attractive voice, "I'll take responsibility for this."
  • No, you've got the wrong idea. I'm just playacting, thought Samantha. The instant the door to the room was pushed open, she let out a moan similar to the ones she had heard on TV. Little did she know, her moan sounded so restrained and sweet and coquettish that it tantalized the man and caused the hearts of those at the door to flutter.
  • "Holy cow, this couple is having sex in the hospital! How f*cking exciting!"
  • The door opened a wide crack, allowing a beam of light to shine obliquely on Samantha from the corridor. The man had her pinned under him, shielding her from the prying eyes of those at the door. All they could see in the dim light was the two bodies pressing against each other, which sent blood running through their veins.
  • "He's absolutely not Henry Baker. Henry is so badly wounded, there's no way he can enjoy this even if you give him a bombshell."
  • "This little p*ssycat sounds so sexy."
  • "Let's f*cking hurry and look for him, or else we'll all be dead!"
  • There was a scuffling noise before the men's footsteps faded into the distance.
  • The man knew that they were gone, but he found that he was no longer able to stop himself. Somehow, the strange woman aroused a desire in him that he had never felt before.
  • Perhaps because the mood was just right—or perhaps because their pose was too seductive—the pent-up anger within Samantha that she had never dared to express finally exploded all at once. Her life was all darkness because she never had control over it. In that case, why couldn't she fight back by indulging herself?
  • With little resistance, she went along with the man right away, giving him her first time in pain.
  • At the end of it, the man kissed Samantha lightly on the cheek before speaking in a deep and husky voice filled with satisfaction. "I'll come to you again," he said before leaving the room in a hurry.
  • For a long time, Samantha didn't get up. Her hip was burning like fire after being pressed hard against the edge of the desk.
  • Just then, the phone, which was about to drop to the floor after being shoved to the edge of her desk, rang. As soon as she picked it up, an urgent voice spoke from the other end of the line. "Dr. Cash, we've got a victim of a car accident here in the ER who is severely injured and needs emergency treatment. Please come over ASAP."
  • Samantha adjusted her voice and replied calmly, "Okay, I'll be there in a minute."
  • When she put down the phone, her expression glazed over for a few seconds. Did I just… Both her disheveled clothes and the dampness between her legs told her that what happened just now wasn't a dream. She'd just had sex with a strange man on her wedding night… This was the most rebellious thing she'd ever done in her life!
  • However, now wasn't the time to think about this. She put on her clothes and rushed to the emergency room.
  • After a busy night, she returned to the on-call room, which was still a complete mess. This seemed to remind her of what had happened the night before, and her hands clenched slightly.
  • Just then, Wisteria Cash came over with a smile. "Thank you for covering my shift, Dr. Yeager."
  • Samantha forced a smile. "You're welcome."
  • "I'm done with my stuff, so you may go back and rest." Wisteria raised her eyebrows when she saw the mess in the room. "How did the room become like this?"
  • Samantha looked away to conceal the hint of fluster in her eyes. "I knocked the stuff over by accident. Since you're here, I'm going back."
  • Wisteria thought she was acting strange, but she didn't think much of it. After entering the room, she picked up the stuff on the floor and put them back in their places.
  • Just then, however, the hospital director showed up at the door with Xavier Hopton, Henry's assistant.
