Chapter 4 Displaced for Internship

  • Lowering her eyes, Samantha came over to pack up her medical bag. Not forgetting her duty as a doctor, she reminded Henry, saying, "Don't let your wounds come into contact with water for the time being. Disinfect them once a day and try to wear loose clothes as much as possible to avoid them rubbing against your wounds." Then, she put down the medications, saying, "This is to be taken orally, and this is for external use."
  • "Uh-huh," Henry mumbled impassively without looking back.
  • Samantha didn't say anything else either. After picking up her medical bag, she stepped out of the room.
  • It was nearly eleven in the morning when she took a taxi back to the hospital. She grabbed a bite in the hospital cafeteria, but as soon as she returned to her department, she was called by the hospital director to his office. "I'm going to recommend Wisteria for the internship at Northshore General Hospital." He had a grave expression, as though there was something that he found it difficult to say.
  • Samantha was startled. Unwilling to give up, she asked, "Didn't you say you'd recommend me for that?"
  • The hospital director replied, "As you know, all the high-tech medical equipment in our hospital is donated by the Dragondale Group. Henry Baker has asked me to look after Dr. Cash, so I have no choice but to do as he says."
  • Samantha couldn't help getting nervous when she heard Henry's name. Even though she was acknowledged by their families as the latter's wife, she'd never met him formally and had only seen him in financial magazines and on TV. Henry and Wisteria? Her heart skipped a beat, but she seemed very imperturbable on the surface. "Is that so?"
  • "Yes, it is. We always hold your medical skills and professionalism in high regard," the hospital director said to placate her. After all, Samantha was his favorite among the young doctors.
  • Samantha lowered her eyes. "I got it." As the wife he's forced into marrying, I'm pretty much nothing to him, so he won't care a damn about me. "I've got surgeries to perform this afternoon, so I gotta go," she said. Inwardly, she knew there'd be no turning back for this.
  • The hospital director let out a sigh before letting her go ahead with her work.
  • Samantha buried herself in work that afternoon and was left exhausted after performing two surgeries. After washing her hands, she took off her blue scrubs and sat in her chair to take a break.
  • Just then, Wisteria came in. "Dr. Yeager," she said with a smile, "let me treat you to dinner."
  • "Thanks for the kind offer, but I've got something else to do," Samantha replied, declining her invitation.
  • She and Wisteria weren't very close as they were merely colleagues. They graduated in the same year from the same university, but Wisteria, who had a domineering personality, was fond of the limelight and liked to compare herself to others. On the other hand, she was a quiet person who enjoyed reading. As they weren't of the same kind, they didn't end up becoming good friends.
  • "Is that so?" Wisteria looked somewhat troubled. "I have something to talk to you about, actually."
  • Samantha stood up and hung her clothes without looking at her. "Shoot." She didn't know why, but she felt like staying further away from Wisteria after learning that the latter was somehow involved with Henry.
  • "You've probably heard about it, haven't you? I'm really sorry. I didn't know the director would—"
  • Samantha cut her short, saying, "It's okay."
  • Wisteria lowered her eyes before they flickered. "Also, could you keep it a secret for me that I wasn't in the hospital last night? I'll be interning at the Northshore General Hospital, after all, so I don't want anything unexpected to crop up."
  • Her excuse sounded somewhat far-fetched, but Samantha knew that the former was fond of this. She replied, "I won't tell anyone about it." In the first place, it was common to cover shifts for colleagues at the last minute since anyone could have an emergency.
  • It was getting dark outside the hospital, and the streetlights were already on.
  • A black luxury MPV was parked outside the hospital entrance. Aaron, who was also in the car, said somewhat boastfully, "My junior's quite skilled in medicine, don't you think?"
  • Henry was reclining languidly in his car seat. He also approved of Samantha's abilities, recalling how she treated his wounds with perfect composure and dexterity.
  • "It's Miss Cash," reminded Xavier in front of them.
  • Henry rolled down the car window.
  • Wisteria came over.
  • Aaron raised his eyebrows slightly when he saw her. "Wisteria."
  • Xavier looked back and asked, "You know her?"
  • Aaron nodded. "Yeah. She's my junior."
  • Henry looked up as a flicker seemed to flash across his eyes. So she's the one who treated my wounds today after saving me last night? She…
  • Xavier commented, "Looks like the cupids have begun their shift." They're finally doing their job, huh?
  • Aaron frowned. "What are you talking about?"
  • Just then, Wisteria came over and interrupted their conversation. "Hi, Mr. Baker."
