Chapter 12 True Motives

  • Philip had already thought of a plan long ago.
  • Meanwhile, Stanley also seemed to have come to a realization. "About the heart replacement you asked me to…"
  • Before he could finish, Samantha reemerged with the first aid kit in her hands, and he instantly clammed his mouth shut.
  • Philip hoisted himself up from the couch with his cane and said to her, "Come with me."
  • With that, he walked toward the study.
  • After placing the first aid kit on the table, Samantha followed him in.
  • Philip sat down in the chair in front of the desk and said with a sad expression, "Henry's parents died early, and I was the one who brought him up. When he was in school, he lived in a dormitory. After graduating from college, he moved out of the Baker Residence and took over the company, so he became even busier and hardly came back."
  • Philip's voice was low. Henry's father was his eldest son, and the pain of sending his own son off had not diminished even after all these years. Besides, there was a reason for Henry's reluctance to return to the Baker Residence. Philip could already predict how Henry would deal with his uncle's family after his death. The reason why Henry could endure to this point was entirely for his sake, so he needed a woman to stay by Henry's side in order to move him and help him regain his emotions so that he would give up his hatred. All of them were his flesh and blood, and Philip did not want to see his family killing each other.
  • "Grandpa." Samantha didn't know how to comfort him. Philip had always treated her quite well, and though it was clear that Richard had asked her to marry into the Baker Family due to his greed, Philip did not look down on her.
  • Philip raised his hand, indicating that she didn't have to worry and that he was fine. "I agreed to your marriage because I know that you're a good child. Your grandfather is a very loyal and kind person. Since you're his granddaughter, you must have inherited his genes, so I want you to stay by Henry's side and take care of him."
  • "Grandpa, I think that the person who stays by his side has to be the one he likes for it to really be beneficial to him…" These words came from the bottom of Samantha's heart. However, to Philip, it was her backing out and trying to find excuses to leave Henry. At his age, what tactics had he not seen yet?
  • It was still easy to pin her down, and he said, "I know you're in a difficult position." Saying that, he retrieved a document from the drawer and handed it to her. "Your mother's illness requires a heart replacement, right? Here's one I've found for your mother, and I've already had it sent to the hospital. As long as you sign this agreement, your mother can undergo surgery immediately, and I'll pay for the operation and the subsequent treatments."
  • At first, she was pleasantly surprised, but she knew things were not that simple, and her eyes fell on the document. It was an agreement, one that promised not to divorce Henry.
  • "I heard that your mother's condition is not well. If you delay any further without replacing her heart, I'm afraid that even the heavens can't save her. Organs like the heart can't just be found, even with money. Besides, you don't have any money." Philip knew very well that if he wanted her to stay faithfully by Henry's side, he had to pinpoint her weak points.
  • Samantha gripped the paper tightly in her hand, her thoughts conflicted, not knowing what to do. Slowly, she understood that this was Philip's true motive behind calling her to the Baker Residence today.
  • "Grandpa, why do you think that I can take care of him?"
  • "I've said this before; I believe in you because you're your grandfather's granddaughter."
  • Samantha tried desperately to calm herself down, but she was still panicking badly. Her mother's treatment couldn't be delayed any further, and the earlier the surgery, the better the recovery.
  • She was already married to Henry. For the sake of her mother, she relented. "I'll sign it."
  • "Good. I know my judgment of you wouldn't be wrong. You'll definitely be able to bring Henry happiness." Finally, there was a faint smile on Philip's stern face.
  • Samantha tightly pursed her lips without speaking. In her heart, she thought, Grandpa, you're wrong. I'm not the one who can bring Henry happiness. That someone is actually Wisteria.
  • "I'll notify the hospital right now to start your mother's operation as soon as they can." Saying that, Philip picked up his phone.
  • Samantha remained standing, her heart beating with nervousness and excitement. After he hung up the phone, she asked, "Grandpa, can I go to the hospital too?"
  • Knowing that she was being filial, Philip agreed. "All right. Go ahead."
  • Besides, after the fiasco from earlier, Henry would definitely not allow her in his room. At that thought, Philip let out a sigh.
  • "Thank you, Grandpa," Samantha thanked him sincerely, full of gratitude.
  • Philip waved a hand and said to Stanley, who was standing outside the door, "Stanley, prepare a car for her."
  • "Miss Yeager, follow me," Stanley said as he walked over.
  • Samantha followed him out. When she got into the car, she still felt like she was dreaming. Everything had happened so quickly that she felt like it was unreal. However, when she arrived at the hospital and saw everything that Philip had arranged, she realized that she was not dreaming, and her mother really was able to undergo the surgery.
  • After a long ordeal, the operation finally succeeded, but there was a long period of observation and care after the operation. As she watched her mother lying in the recovery room, there was a hint of relief on her face when she saw that her mother had finally been saved.
  • When she returned to her department without getting any sleep all night, someone called out to her in the hallway. "Dr. Yeager."
  • When she turned around, she saw the nurse, Zoey, who was in the same department. Zoey came over and said to her, "You left early yesterday, so you didn't hear Dr. Cash's smug speech. She's really gotten bold now that she has a backer."
  • Samantha gently lowered her gaze, refusing to comment on Wisteria's affairs.
  • "I don't think that Dr. Cash is prettier than you. What do you think Henry likes about her?"
  • Not wanting Zoey to drag her into gossiping about others, Samantha said, "Dr. Cash is very pretty. She must have some good points if Mr. Baker took a liking to her. We shouldn't talk about her behind her back."
  • Zoey pouted. "Anyhow, instead of a farewell party yesterday, it was an excuse for her to show off. Who doesn't know that that internship slot belonged to you—"
  • "Miss Zoey, I still have other matters to attend to." Samantha interrupted her. It wouldn't be ideal if someone overheard her words as it was easy to get themselves in trouble.
  • Sensing that she didn't want to talk about this, Zoey didn't say anything else. As morning was the busiest time in the hospital, there were already long lines of people coming to see the doctor at the registration windows. Thus, they each went to their own posts.
  • That morning, Samantha had an operation, so she rested for a little over two hours before she went into the operating room. With two operations down and a lack of sleep, she was so exhausted that she was completely defeated and was about to take a nap during her noon break when a nurse came over and informed her, "Mr. Greyson wants you to go to his office."
  • "Did something happen?" she asked, thinking that if it wasn't urgent, she could go over later.
  • "I don't know either. I'm just passing the word on. You'll probably find out once you're there," the nurse said with a smile.
  • Samantha nodded and replied, "All right, I'll head over now."
  • With that, she stood up and walked toward Joseph's office, where she knocked on the door and entered after hearing a reply from inside.
  • "Mr. Greyson."
  • He was sitting behind his desk. Upon seeing her, he placed his work down and seemed hesitant to speak.
  • "Dr. Yeager, did you offend Henry?"
