Chapter 10 No Matter How Cold-Hearted He Is, He's Still Human

  • Everyone else was just as confused. Yeah, why do both of them coincidentally have to leave?
  • Wisteria was beginning to sense that something was amiss as well. If she had just misheard earlier, what about now? Her eyes roamed back and forth between Henry and Samantha, trying to discern something.
  • "Dr. Yeager, why do you have to leave?" she asked tentatively.
  • Samantha really wanted to tell Wisteria that she was Henry's wife and have Henry painstakingly explain everything to her thereafter. However, in reality, she didn't dare to as she couldn't afford to mess with this man. She had already lost the opportunity to work at Northshore General Hospital. She could not afford to lose her job.
  • Hence, she could only cower and reply, "My grandfather asked me to see him. It seems that something urgent came up, so I have no choice but to go back. I just didn't expect that Mr. Baker would have to leave as well. It really is a coincidence, haha…" She laughed dryly.
  • She was trying to brush over the topic, but Henry had other ideas. "It just so happens that my grandfather called for me too. Where does your grandfather live? Need a ride?"
  • Samantha was unable to hold up the smile on her face, and if it wasn't for her strong self-restraint, she would have smashed the teacup on the table into his despicable face.
  • "Mr. Baker, you're really good at joking. How is it possible for us to be going the same way? Anyway, I have to go. Make yourself at home, Mr. Baker." Saying that, she fled with her tail between her legs.
  • Feeling uneasy, Wisteria looked at Henry subtly. "Do you know Dr. Yeager?"
  • However, his expression was cold, as if his earlier words did not come from him. "I don't."
  • With that said, he got up from his seat.
  • Meanwhile, Wisteria let out a sigh of relief. She had deliberately invited Henry today because she wanted to show him off to everyone in the hospital, but she hadn't expected it to turn out like this. Still, at least Henry dropped by; everyone must be well aware of their relationship by now.
  • "I'll see you off." Wisteria followed him, afraid that the two would have any contact with each other outside. After all, the woman from that night was Samantha.
  • As he walked out of the hotel, Henry took a look around the entrance and noticed that Samantha was not there.
  • In fact, Samantha couldn't wait to get away from Henry, so she would naturally not wait for him and had already left in a cab long ago.
  • Xavier pulled the car door open. "Mr. Baker."
  • Henry looked at Wisteria and said, "Go back." Then, he got into the car and left.
  • As Wisteria watched the car disappear in the distance, she felt regretful. Had she known earlier and immediately asked him to marry her at that time, she would have been Henry's wife by now. When would she be able to win Henry's heart? When would he see how good she was and fall in love with her?
  • Meanwhile, Samantha arrived first at the Baker Residence.
  • The old man was already over eighty years old, and the wrinkles on his face were deep and composed after the passage of time. He seemed to be in good spirits, and though his eyes were not as bright as they used to be, they shone with a kind expression as he asked worriedly, "Are you getting used to things now?"
  • Samantha nodded. "Yes."
  • It was her father's idea to let her marry Henry, and it was common knowledge that Philip's most beloved grandson was Henry. Knowing full well that Henry did not like her, she expected Philip to refuse based on how well he treated Henry. Even if he owed her family a favor, he could have provided other benefits to convince her father otherwise. However, not only did he agree, but he also used his connections to obtain a marriage certificate for her and Henry in his absence, and it was also his idea to let her move into Henry's villa. To this day, Samantha couldn't understand why Philip did this.
  • "Henry hasn't caused any trouble for you, has he?" Philip asked her dotingly.
  • Samantha yearned to reply that he was just not human, but she understood that although Philip treated her well, Henry was still his grandson.
  • "No…"
  • She had just finished speaking when Henry walked in.
  • As soon as he entered, Philip told him off. "You and Samantha are married now. Why aren't you together this late at night? Samantha has been here for so long, yet you've only just arrived?"
  • Henry glanced at Samantha and didn't answer.
  • Philip knew his grandson like the back of his hand. Despite knowing Henry was dissatisfied with his marriage, he still berated him on Samantha's behalf.
  • "Both of you will stay here tonight. Stanley, take Samantha to Henry's room."
  • Stanley replied respectfully, "Yes, sir."
  • Then, he gestured at Samantha to follow him. "Miss Yeager, please come with me."
  • Samantha cautiously stole a glance at Henry, who had a cold expression. Seeing that he was not looking at her, she quietly withdrew her gaze and followed the butler out, leaving the two of them in the room.
  • The old man's haggard voice was mixed with helplessness as he said, "I know you resent her, but things have already ended so long ago. It's time for you to let go."
  • Philip seemed to recall the past, for his eyes darkened.
  • Henry sprawled out in the chair, his lips pursed as he remained silent, and his expression was too secretive for anyone to guess what he was thinking.
  • Philip sighed. "I was the one who arranged for you to marry Samantha. Don't blame me for taking matters into my own hands. I did it for your own good. You're not young anymore, and it's time for you to start a family. Even though Samantha's father was unethical by using our debt against us, Samantha is a good girl."
  • Henry raised his eyebrows, his expression icy. Could a good girl cheat on me? However, he didn't tell Philip that he would definitely break his marriage off with Samantha.
  • Philip looked at him, feeling helpless. Within the Baker Family, Henry was only willing to listen to a word or two from him. If not, he might not even be interested in stepping into this house. Since the death of his parents, he had mostly stayed silent, and was even more reluctant to return to the mansion.
  • Since he was unable to pressure Henry too much, Philip waved his hand weakly. "It's getting late. You should get some rest soon."
  • When Henry got up, Stanley had just returned. "Good night, Mr. Baker."
  • With an indifferent hum in reply, Henry left the room.
  • After that, Stanley walked toward Philip and asked in a low voice, "Is this all right?"
  • Philip said, "No matter how cold-hearted he is, he's still human. How can he not have any emotions or desires? Could he not have any desires or impulses that a man should have when facing a beautiful woman?"
  • However, Stanley was still worried. "It's not like you aren't aware of Mr. Baker's temper. He definitely knows that you're making him stay with Miss Yeager on purpose."
  • "How can they develop feelings for each other without any interaction? I can't control him outside, but he'll still listen to me in the Baker Residence." The old man's voice was low, and his heart was full of guilt toward Henry. He continued, his tone profound, "I don't have much time left in me. He needs someone by his side to take care of him."
  • "Mr. Baker will definitely understand your efforts," Stanley assured him as he helped Philip back to his room.
  • Meanwhile, Samantha had been led by Stanley to Henry's room in the old mansion.
  • Before leaving, he said, "This is the room where Mr. Baker stayed in since he was a child, and it had been redecorated once."
  • This room was decorated in a different style from the one in his villa. It had a deeper tone, with black and gray as the main colors, and it was full of iciness without any trace of warmth. Samantha's eyes inadvertently fell on the shelf, where a dainty box caught her eye. As it looked like something a girl would like, it seemed out of place with the rest of the room.
  • Just as she was about to take a look, a cold and stern voice came from behind her.
  • "What are you doing?!"
