Chapter 4 Compromise

  • After Josephine changed her clothes and stepped out of the bathroom, she saw Maverick glancing at her coldly in silence. Then, he got up and headed outward, and she had no choice but to follow him obediently.
  • The atmosphere in the silver Bentley was so tense along the way that Josephine could only stare out of the window, shrinking into the corner of the car seat.
  • She always felt a chill that made her shiver uncontrollably whenever she was around him.
  • An hour later, the vehicle stopped in the most luxurious mansion area in Avenport. The environment there had an elegant vibe, and the layout was exquisite. Only Maverick could afford to own a mansion over a thousand square meters at that upscale place.
  • The car drove into the garage and had just come to a steady halt when an impassive voice rang out. “Get out of the car.”
  • Although the Quillen residence, where Josephine used to stay, was also considered a high-end mansion, it couldn't be compared to where Maverick lived. She timidly trailed behind Maverick, matching his pace.
  • “Mr. Lambert, you're back.” The butler, Louis Fonzi, came forward to greet Maverick. Louis glanced at the beautiful woman behind Maverick but didn't say anything.
  • Maverick strode into the living room and took a seat. Rosa Hall, the housekeeper, served him a beverage. “Mr. Lambert, here's your coffee.” That was Maverick's habit, and the housekeepers were proactive and mindful of it.
  • Holding the delicate and precious coffee mug, Maverick savored the rich aroma of his favorite top-grade coffee beans from Jeradus.
  • Josephine, on the other hand, could only stand anxiously to the side, unable to shake off the feeling of being out of place in that setting. Still, I can't escape, can I?
  • All of a sudden, the coffee mug fell to the floor and shattered. “Mr. Lambert!” Rosa immediately went forward to clean up the mess but was waved away by Maverick.
  • “You. Come here and clean this up.” Maverick pointed at Josephine.
  • Josephine, who hadn't yet wrapped her mind around the situation, was momentarily stunned.
  • “Ms. Quillen, or should I call you Mrs. Lambert? What's the matter? Are you reluctant to do this?” Maverick uttered mockingly.
  • Even if I'm unwilling, I have no choice but to do it. Besides, I've done such things at the Quillen residence anyway. For me, it was a familiar task, as easy as breathing.
  • Josephine bent down, picked up the broken porcelain pieces, and tossed them into the trash can. Then, she took the cloth from Rosa and wiped the floor clean. Josephine noticed his shiny shoes were also stained with coffee, so she took a few pieces of tissues from the table and carefully wiped his shoes.
  • Her biggest fear at that moment was that he would be displeased and boot her, so she practiced extra caution.
  • However, when a man was fixated on making things difficult for a woman, especially one he disdained, he wouldn't show any mercy.
  • Maverick gazed at Josephine. I'm surprised Jasmine is capable of compromising.
  • He retracted his leg abruptly. Josephine looked up at him and wondered. Is he dissatisfied?
  • The next second, she felt a large palm grasp her chin. “From today onward, you'll stay here obediently. Without my permission, you're not allowed to take a step out of this place. Also, you need to ensure the cleanliness and tidiness of everything here.” He made himself clear.
  • She fathomed his intention. I'm not here to enjoy life as Mrs. Lambert. I'm here to play the role of a housekeeper.
  • “I got it.” Josephine nodded.
  • “Good that you know.” Maverick got up and walked away.
  • “H-Hold on!” Seeing he was about to leave, she hastily called out to him.
  • He stopped in his tracks. “If you don't understand something, ask Louis or Rosa.” Maverick had no intention of wasting his breath talking to her.
  • “N-No! That's not it.” Josephine grabbed his hand. “I'll do whatever you ask me to, but I wish to go to school.”
  • School? Maverick felt as if he had heard the world's funniest joke. “You want to go to school? Are my ears playing tricks on me? You're the Quillen family's daughter and can have everything you want, so do you need to go to school? Besides, if my memories serve me right, Ms. Quillen has never been a good student, right?” Maverick sneered.
  • Josephine was stumped. Jasmine fits his description and doesn't need to attend school, but I'm different. I need to stand on my own two feet. I have dreams I want to accomplish.
  • “Quit bothering me!” Maverick kicked her aside and turned around to head to the second floor.
  • “M-Mr. Lambert!” Josephine couldn't give up just like that. She wanted to move forward, but Rosa stopped her. “You can't go up there!” Without Maverick's permission, no one was allowed upstairs.
  • “No!” Josephine could do everything else, but she couldn't give up her education. I've put in so much effort and studied hard to get into university and also worked a whole summer to earn my tuition fee. So, how can I give in just like that?
  • Maverick turned around and saw Josephine, who had barged into the room. “Who allowed you to come upstairs?”
  • Only then did she realize her impulsiveness. She shouldn't have gone upstairs, as that was his personal space.
  • “Get out!” Maverick bellowed, seeing Josephine still standing at the doorway.
  • “M-Mr. Lambert.” She turned around, her eyes fixed on the ground, unwilling to meet Maverick's gaze. The next second, Josephine instinctively felt like leaving the room.
