Chapter 10 He Had Found Another Woman

  • Maverick was not expecting to bump into someone when he made his way to the living room. The look in his eyes grew cold instantly, and he didn't even bother to reach out and hold that person steady. He just stood there and watched as Josephine fell to the floor.
  • Josephine tensed up the moment she looked up and met Maverick's icy-cold gaze. “I'm sorry, I...”
  • “Why are you in such a hurry? Which guy are you going to meet this time?” Maverick asked sarcastically. This woman just won't behave herself, huh?
  • “I'm not!” Josephine protested, only to fall silent when she made eye contact with him again. She knew that he would never believe her words, so no amount of explaining would make a difference.
  • To Maverick, all of her explanations were nothing but excuses.
  • “Oh?” Maverick raised an eyebrow at her in response. He clearly did not believe her in the slightest.
  • As Josephine looked at the time, she realized she would most likely be late again. Upon standing up, she noticed a hickey on Maverick's neck.
  • Huh... So, he didn't come home because he was with some other woman? Well, not that I mind, though. In fact, I want him to be with another woman. That way, he might just set me free! Of course, I know this is just wishful thinking, but I can dream.
  • Josephine kept quiet as she stared at the familiar-looking scenery outside the car window. Maverick didn't speak either, but he seemed to be very angry at her. Dad just owes him money, right? I could work hard and pay it back little by little! Why do I have to spend the rest of my life with him?
  • Josephine was snapped out of her train of thought when Gordon slammed the brakes to avoid a car that ran a red light. As she looked up to see what was going on, her gaze fell upon a news article that was being displayed on a huge LED sign next to the road.
  • According to the news article, Flynn Cheswick had become the executive director of Jurich Group. Huh? Since when did Flynn return? Why didn't he come and see me if he's back? Has he forgotten about me? S-Should I pay him a visit?
  • After getting out of Gordon's line of sight, Josephine snuck out of the university and made her way to Jurich Group. Too scared to venture inside, Josephine simply stood outside the front door and stared at the office building.
  • It wasn't until her legs began to go numb that she snapped out of her dazed state. Josephine turned around and was about to leave when a commotion broke out outside the building entrance, prompting her to pause in her tracks.
  • The automatic doors slid open, and a group of people came through them seconds later. The one standing in the middle was none other than Flynn himself. He was not alone, though. Walking with an arm wrapped around his was a beautiful and elegant-looking woman.
  • Ah, so he has found himself another woman... The smile on Josephine's face grew bitter, and tears rolled down her face as she watched Flynn enter the car with that woman.
  • Suddenly, Flynn looked up and glanced in her direction. Josephine quickly looked the other way to avoid his gaze. By the time she turned back around, the black car was already out of sight. The only people around were the assistants, who were still standing at the building entrance.
  • He is enjoying the time of his life, but what about me? I lost my virginity and whatever freedom I had left. I was clinging to the tiny bit of hope that Flynn would come back someday and take me away, but that's clearly not going to happen anymore. My pride is the only thing I have left now...
  • As the sky grew dark, the dim lighting from the street lamps cast a long and lonely shadow behind Josephine. After dragging herself back to the university, she froze when she saw the car still parked outside the front gate. “I'm sorry, Gordon.”
  • “Mr. Lambert is waiting for you at home, Ms. Quillen,” Gordon said as he got out of the car and opened the door for her.
  • Upon returning to the mansion, Josephine saw Maverick sitting on the couch in the living room with Anna by his side.
  • “Finally decided to come home, huh?” Maverick asked as he put his cigarette out and stared at her.
  • “I'm sorry. I had some stuff to attend to,” Josephine apologized with her head held low.
  • “I told you, I don't want to hear you say you're sorry!” Maverick shouted while glaring coldly at her.
  • “I won't do it again,” Josephine mumbled while twiddling her fingers. She was about to go to her room when Maverick shouted at her again, “Stop! Did I say you could go?”
  • He then got to his feet and walked up to her as he continued, “Do you really think you're the mistress of the Lambert family?”
  • “No, I was just going to prepare dinner. What would you like to eat?” Josephine replied. Such a thought had never crossed her mind.
  • Maverick made his way back to the couch and sat down next to Anna. “What would you like to eat?” he asked softly with a gentle look on his face.
  • Anna shot Josephine a glance and affectionately gave Maverick a hug. “Are you sure the Quillen family's daughter can cook? I don't know if I will like her cooking.”
  • “Give it a try, then. I'll take you out for dinner if you don't like it,” Maverick said while wrapping his arm around Anna's waist.
  • He's doing this on purpose, isn't he? What is he trying to achieve? Assert his dominance?
  • Josephine simply kept quiet and made her way into the kitchen. After glancing at the ingredients in the refrigerator, she began planning how she would prepare them.
  • However, nothing she did would satisfy Maverick and Anna, as they were determined to make things difficult for her anyway.
  • In order to see what she could manage on her own, Maverick had tasked all the other housekeepers with tidying up the rooms instead.
