Chapter 11 Deliberately Picking A Bone With Her

  • Maverick and Anna were seated across from each other at the dining table when dinner was served. Anna had a look of disdain on her face upon seeing the dishes. She then gave each dish a try and complained about them being either too salty, too spicy, or too bland.
  • Maverick shot Josephine a cold glare and asked, “What's the matter with you? Are you unhappy because you had to cook?”
  • Josephine shook her head. “No, I'm not.” Those two were clearly trying to pick a bone with her, so nothing she said would be of any help.
  • “Then why do all these dishes taste so bad?” Maverick snapped at her and swept all the dishes to the floor, instantly creating a huge mess in the dining room.
  • Josephine had expected that to happen, so it didn't really bother her all that much. She simply stood there and watched as Maverick wasted the food, which she had spent over an hour preparing.
  • After all the heartache she had experienced that day, this did nothing to hurt her feelings.
  • The sight of Flynn being intimate with another woman hurt her far more than what Maverick and Anna did to her.
  • Maverick got even angrier when he saw the expressionless look on her face. He then slapped her hard across the face, causing her to fall to the floor with a loud thud.
  • Ah... So, I do still feel pain, after all...
  • “Clean this place up!” Maverick yelled. He hated seeing her being cold and unresponsive toward him.
  • He wanted her to lose control of her emotions, throw a tantrum, and beg him with tears in her eyes.
  • Maverick loved being in control of everything, but he didn't seem to have any control over Josephine whatsoever. That was probably the reason he got so angry.
  • Josephine knelt on the floor and began picking up the broken pieces of the ceramic plates one by one. While doing so, she accidentally cut herself on her finger. Blood came flowing out of the wound instantly, but she showed no emotion and continued cleaning up the floor.
  • I could have just swept it up using a broom. Why did I have to use my hands and put myself at risk of getting hurt? It's time to face reality, Josephine! You're nothing but an orphan that the Quillen family adopted! Even Flynn, who made you a promise, has changed completely. You've lost your virginity, and your heart has been stabbed countless times over. What more could you possibly hope for? You should just accept the harsh reality that you're in. This man will only continue to humiliate you for the rest of your life!
  • There was a look of defeat in Maverick's eyes when he saw that Josephine did not respond at all.
  • He then turned around and left without even looking at Anna.
  • Josephine looked up when she heard their footsteps, only to watch the two leave while hugging each other intimately. It wasn't until they had left the mansion in Maverick's car that she slumped weakly to the floor.
  • Her tears began to fall, and she couldn't seem to stop herself from crying.
  • Just like that, she sat there on the floor of the dining hall and bawled her eyes out while her blood stained the tiles red.
  • Rosa came down the stairs when she heard the noise, only to see Josephine crying while bleeding on the floor. Ah, I knew this would happen. Anna is one of Mr. Lambert's women and has been here a few times before. She's particularly picky about the food and would stick to Mr. Lambert like glue. However, as a mere housekeeper, I am not in a position to say anything about it.
  • “Please get up, Ms. Quillen,” Rosa called out to Josephine while helping her to her feet. She then brought Josephine into her room and treated her wound with a first aid kit. The piece of the ceramic plate had left a very deep cut on her finger.
  • “Don't cry, Ms. Quillen. Everything will eventually come to pass. I know you're a kind woman,” Rosa said while wiping Josephine's tears dry. Being a mother herself, she treated Josephine as her own daughter.
  • After what seemed like forever, Josephine stopped crying and said, “Thanks, Rosa. I'll be fine. I just need some rest, that's all.”
  • “All right, then. Get some rest.” Rosa waited until Josephine had laid down on the bed and closed her eyes before she left the room.
  • However, Josephine opened her eyes when the faint moonlight came pouring into the room through the window. There was no way she could fall asleep after everything that had happened. She then got out of bed and retrieved a silver bracelet from a box. It looked ordinary and wasn't all that expensive, but it was something she treasured most. That silver bracelet was a present that Flynn had given her, along with a promise on her tenth birthday.
  • Josephine still remembered the promise Flynn made her even though five years had passed since he left her, but he seemed to have completely forgotten about her.
  • Josephine spent the entire night crying in a corner of the bed while clutching the bracelet tightly. She didn't sleep a wink that night as she kept thinking about her situation. I have lost everything, and no amount of effort will change that. So, what should I do?
  • Rosa saw Josephine lying there with her eyes red and puffy.
  • “I made you something to eat, Ms. Quillen. Would you care to have some? Why don't you take the day off today? Just stay home and get some rest. Don't worry about anything else,” Rosa said while walking up to her bed.
  • Josephine stared silently at Rosa in response. It had been forever since she felt such warmth in her life.
