Chapter 8

  • The call arrived when she was looking through her cupboard for something quick and easy to heat up and eat. She snatched up the phone without checking the number and grabbed a package of crackers. "Hello?"
  • In Ernest's voice, "Hello, my angel," his tone was soft and clear.
  • She groaned and said, "Please don't call me that." There are no angels in my life, and I don't pretend to be one.
  • "Is Amanda correct?" She could see his crooked smile in her mind's eye as his voice deepened with insinuation.
  • It was hard for her not to laugh when she explained what she meant. Please tell me why you're calling now.
  • A hurt note came from his voice: "Of course there is a cause. I need you to help me again!
  • Then she went on to inquire, "And what, pray tell?
  • He said boredom was the main cause of his annoyance at Nurse Naggard's incessant pricking and prodding. So I need you to come over and show her how you handled it the nice way.
  • Amanda chuckled and said, "I'm sure the nurse is more qualified than I am, so stop being a baby and take your meds."
  • His accusation: "You're meaner than I recall." " What if I told you I only wanted to meet you again so I could properly thank you?" "We could go out to supper," he said.
  • Elena and Alecks are coming this afternoon to inspect the greenhouse for insurance purposes, and after they leave, "I will still be cleaning up the mess you caused," she jokingly promised.
  • As a last resort, he asked if he might send someone in to aid him.
  • Her voice grew strained as she said, "No, having someone else stomp around without understanding what they are doing will merely slow me down." She replied, attempting to rescue as many plants as she could. "I appreciate the offer, though.
  • She whispered to him, "I'm sorry." "I'm sorry I made a mess for you to clean up," says the child.
  • That was an accident, I'm sure of it. "That you're alive is all that matters to me," Amanda added. This farm will be back to its former glory in no time. "I wouldn't have been able to bear even a few broken pots if you'd been gravely harmed or worse," she added honestly.
  • A new approach: "I was hoping that you could bring me something from the jet that I left behind," he added. He was eager to see her again, but he was still not allowed to drive for at least a few more days after he was released from the hospital.
  • "Alecks will be back in the city this afternoon, and he'll be able to bring it back to you," she said.
  • "In a portfolio, I keep certain papers. "This is delicate and I don't want someone I don't know handling it," he continued, his voice trembling.
  • You don't even know who I am, you foolish fool. You believe I won't snoop on you , don't you? " She inquired.
  • It doesn't matter if you want to acknowledge it or not, you're an angel. "It's clear to him that Amanda is a wonderful person who cares about others," he remarked with confidence. "Are you going to carry it with you ?" I don't care if you arrive late or early. If you wish, you may simply leave it off at my place. Taking an hour or two off of work tonight won't make a difference.
  • In the end, I don't think I'll be able to make it tonight. "Can it wait till tomorrow? "she inquired.
  • In an attempt to downplay his disappointment in her, he answered, "Sure," noting that she had committed to coming the next day. After a little pause, he continued, "Whenever you can be here tomorrow is fine."
  • As a precaution, I'll go acquire the folio right now. Inquiring after Ernest had described what it looked like and where it should be, she inquired, "Where precisely did you leave it?"
  • He asked, "So, I'll see you tomorrow?"
  • "Unless you'd rather me to deliver it to you tonight, it could be quicker," she said. She was simply thinking about it
  • I prefer not to leave it in the hands of someone I don't know, therefore I'd prefer if you brought it yourself," he replied
  • She responded, "Okay, then, I'll see you tomorrow," and then went to sleep
  • Before she had a chance to protest back, he responded , "Thank you, my angel," and then hung up the phone
  • Amanda made her way to the airport after grabbing a few crackers from the package. In the tail portion of the plane, where it was likely to have fallen during the accident, she eventually found the leather-bound case after a half-hour of careful searching. Heaving it back to the home, she tucked it away in her bedroom where it would be out of Elena's reach and where she would never forget it
  • Because she had gotten so much done today with Bob's aid and was really hungry for the first time in days when Alecks and Elena came, she decided to cook some damper to feed them. She was unable to leave due to the floods and a lack of money, but she had the basics and could make a variety of dishes with wheat, eggs , sugar, salt and long-life milk
  • Amanda had baked two dampers by the time the guests arrived. The notion had crossed her mind that she would be able to bring one to Ernest tomorrow, so as not to come without a gift. A dish of pikelets and a batch of muffins cooked with a can of black cherries discovered in the pantry were also on the table
  • Elena arched her eyebrow and gave Alecks a thoughtful look, saying, "Someone's been busy.
  • I haven't touched her in years, so don't look at me ,' Alecks remarked. What had Amanda ever seen in her pretentious, pompous step-brother? She glared in bewilderment
  • In the face of all of your efforts, you really must quit making an even greater fool of yourself by obsessively admiring a man who you can't have. Currently, Alecks is working. Elena remarked in a lovely voice tinged with malice, "The celebration is in ten days, and you don't want to disgrace him or yourself by trying to impress him and hoping he'll come back to the farm." As soon as she learned of their fling, she put an immediate end to it
  • But just when the highways are starting to open up again, a jet crashes into my life. Not that you'd notice. " I have no choice but to bake or perish at this point," Amanda scolded.
