- I dropped the gun, the metallic clatter echoing the shock numbing my limbs. My gaze snapped to Fabio, already a grotesque, glistening mess in his own blood. My hands, trembling uncontrollably, fumbled to help him, to lift him. "Ava," he rasped, his voice barely a whisper, "I'm too heavy for you..."
- Before I could even protest, the roar of engines shattered the silence. Three black vans, sleek and menacing, screeched to a halt outside, disgorging a wave of Diego and Dante's men. But it was too late. The party was over.
