- I never really got the appeal of football until I met Alex. Why would I? I grew up in a family of three sisters who all favored ballet over team sports. Sometimes my father would watch a play-off game in the family room, but it all seemed so myste- rious. No matter how often Dad explained the rules, I could never figure out why the “down” kept changing from first to second then back to first again. Eventually I gave up trying.
