• Kathy had the misfortune of getting pregnant when she was just sixteen years old. The father of the baby was the twenty-two year old son of a very well to do family in the area. Kathy's parents were not happy at all, but when it was discovered that the boy had been deceived by a fake I.D. that Kathy had gotten so that she could drink, they weren't mad at him. In fact, they thought very highly of the young man that never stopped coming around to see her, even though they were not allowed to be alone when he did. It was obvious that the two young people were really in love. When Kathy had the baby her parents insisted that she stay at home and in school and they would help her raise the boy until she got out on her own.
• Kathy was unaware that Robert had made plans with her parents, after asking her dad for her hand in marriage like a good southern man would do, to marry her just after she turned eighteen. They were married the day after she turned eighteen and she and their son moved into his house not far from where her parents lived. Kathy enrolled in some business classes at the local college because she wanted to be able to work when her son started school. As fate would have it she had an exam at college the day of the race and was unable to attend like she normally would have. Her son Brandon was with her mother and she was in class when a sheriff's deputy pulled her out of class to break the news to her. She broke down in the hallway outside of class and the deputy explained to the professor, who had stepped out to check on her, what was going on. The professor told Kathy to go take care of things and that she could make up the exam in a couple of weeks and that she would inform the administration what was going on.
