• “Maddie!” My mother scolded me, her face composed and her voice calm while I was losing my mind.
• “Father.” I jumped out of my seat, baffled by what I had just heard. “You can’t possibly be serious.”
• “Oh, my daughter.” He threw a smile my way; that gave me the wrong shivers, and right now looking at him was only getting me more riled up. “I am very serious. I have to see your mate before I decide if you have a part in this inheritance.”
