• I woke up early the next morning in our Tokyo hotel room feeling both excited and nervous about the surprise I had planned for Elara. She was still sleeping peacefully beside me with her hair spread across the pillow. I watched her for a while thinking about how much I wanted today to be special. After breakfast I told her we were going somewhere fun but I would not say where. She kept asking questions in the car but I only smiled and told her to wait and see. When we finally arrived at Tokyo Disneyland her eyes widened at the big gate and all the colorful buildings. She stopped walking and looked at me with a frown.
• “This is for children Mateo,” she said, crossing her arms. “I am not a little girl. Why did you bring me here?” Her voice had that defensive tone I knew so well but I could see curiosity hiding behind it.
