- The road curved for so long that I dozed off a couple of times.
- I sat rigidly in the back of the blacked-out vehicle, Xaden beside me, my father in the front seat with the driver. No one spoke. The world outside the tinted glass shifted from dense forest to stretches of empty land, to roads that were cracked and forgotten, to quiet towns that blinked past us like they were ashamed to make eye contact.
