• Emilia came to, slowly peeling her eyes open, only to find Max lying beside her running a hand up and down her arm. His gaze was lowered between them and she figured he was deep in thought so she took a moment to study him. He'd aged over the years, especially in the last two but not so much. There were still traces of the boy who'd gone to Freddie's restaurant and left her big tips because she'd told him she wasn't a charity case. That boy had been sweet, caring, and in love with her. How could she accuse him of trying to be a hero? Why was it that whenever she lost her temper, she accused him of outrageous things?
