Chapter 9 Drinks

• I open my eyes as the world comes back to me and then shift them to the woman beside me. She is keeping her gaze fixed straight ahead like she is lost in the race, but by how tense her features are and how her fingers twitch against her thighs I know she is uncomfortable having me here beside her.
• “I'm going to get a cigarette,” I announce, unable to sit there and pretend I'm oblivious to how much she doesn't want me there. “Excuse me.”
