- I stared at the business card on the table. The lawyer’s name was printed in a bold serif font, clean and clinical like this whole damn mess had been a spreadsheet waiting to be filed. I turned it over in my hand a few times, my fingers trembling slightly—not from fear. No, fear had long since drained from my body. This was something else. A steady heat beneath my ribs. Rage, maybe. Or survival.
