  • By the time I finally pushed the door closed behind us, I felt like my bones were carrying bricks. My cheeks still hurt from all the fake smiling. My stomach was knotted so tight I wasn’t sure if I was hungry or sick. The school event was supposed to be this sweet little thing—kids singing, parents clapping—but it had turned into something else. Something bigger. Something that left me trembling even now as I set my bag on the counter.
  • Solenne, on the other hand, had energy bubbling out of her like soda. She skipped into the living room, still talking about the flowers on stage and how her friend Lily messed up her dance move. She laughed about it like it was the funniest thing in the world.
